Flash Flood Watch and it is -18F below zero???
« on: January 14, 2016, 02:09:11 PM »
Just looked at the NWS forecast page here in Gunnison, Colorado and something caught my eye:  A FLASH FLOOD WATCH and it is currently -18F outside [goofy]  Thinking someone really screwed up, but wondering if I should make evacuation plans just in case the storm brewing in the Atlantic happened my way, decided maybe I should investigate more.  Come to find out, there is a ice jam on the Gunnison River, north of Gunnison, slowing making it's way down stream.  It is causing minor flooding as the water is diverted out of the banks.  However, if the ice jam breaks a 5 to 8 foot wave of water - umm, more like slush- is expected to be unleashed down valley.  And I did not bring my life vest to work today [roll]

No worries in town; it is more the low lying areas adjacent to the river.  Sounds like it is pretty impressive sight demonstrating the power of water and ice.  Talked to a co-worker and the ice flow is taking out trees potentially causing more ice blockage.    Hopefully no state highway bridges are taken out.  Be interesting if any youtube videos get posted.

No videos available yet. That might be a good thing, though.

I need to get a UAV to see what is happening- that would be a nice video clip.  I am thinking the damage is minor (affecting agriculture land) and the "flood" more a visual curiosity.  Not really on any peoples minds at work.  Here is a short video clip and more information:

Count on Murphy . . . (Re: Flash Flood Watch and it is -18F below zero???)

Dear Jeff, Blick, Herb, and WeatherCat observers of the National Weather Service warnings,

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH and it is currently -18F outside [goofy]

. . .

If Murphy's law is given any opportunity . . . . it will!  [banghead]
