Title: Add banner to simple pages
Post by: busch on September 14, 2013, 10:12:20 AM
As an user that doesn't spend too much time in building web pages I would appreciate have the banner on my simple web page. Also it would be nice to have more web pages to choose.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to the feature request list.

Cheers,
Stu.

You can probably work around this by simply setting the custom web FTP settings to exactly the same as your simple web settings.

I haven't actually tried this, but in theory it would mean the banner generator uploads your banner to your simple web-site.

Somebody please try this suggested method of getting the banner from the custom web to the simple web, and if it works tell me how to do it.
Regards, Irving

I believe you said you are using the "Simple Web" function. Is that correct?
You are now also having WC create/update a 'banner', correct?

If the above are both true, it should then be simple to add a small bit of text in the cleverly labeled "Text" tab of the WC "Simple Web" Prefs that will display the image on that Simple Web page. All that is required is the use of the html image tag "<img>".

Unfortunately, the above was based on not understanding that the banner is currently only installed in and uploaded from the Custom Web output folder. (see page 87 of The Manual) Therefore, it appears you need to create a 'dummy' Custom Web site to actually get your banner uploaded. That 'dummy' site can be something that doesn't actually even get seen in any browser. It will be used to simply instruct WC to upload your banner. this is not really difficult, but will require you to create a simple ".txt" file which is a bit more than detailed than is suitable for this thread. In actuality, html is not much different than using the 'styling' buttons here, in the 'full editor' window. However, once this is done, you can use the text below to get your banner displayed in your current web site.

You already know the url to your web page (http://www.magpie-hill.com). The following 'code' should display your banner somewhere on your page.
Code: [Select]
<img src="WeatherCatBanner.jpg">BTW, I'm assuming WC places the banner image in the root level of your site.

Right now, I don't think you are able to effectively position anything to precisely. However, the Manual illustrates using the h4 header tag, so WC may be able to 'read the text and put 'header' info nearer the top of its generated html. Perhaps anyone already using the "Simple Web" facility can further explain its capabilities.

BTW, you can view your own web page by using many apps, the easiest would be Safari with its "Develop" menu enabled. Just select "Show Page Source" in that menu. To enable that menu, open Safari Prefs, click the Advanced tab and tick the box at the very bottom of that window ("Show Develop menu in menu bar").

All you should need to do is:
1. Go to the custom web pane of the preferences. Even with custom web disabled you'll note you can still edit the FTP details.
2. Enter these FTP details exactly as per your simple web ftp settings.

Then enable FTP in the banner generator - it should now be ftp'd to your simple pages directory on your server on a regular basis (from where you can link to it etc).

Hi Stu,
I was able to follow your instructions and can now link to my banner with www.magpie-hill.com/weathercatbanner.jpg Now I am wondering how I can effectively use it for something cool. I guess there is no way to put it on my Simple Web. But maybe for something else sufficiently simple.
Thanks, Irving
Title: Add it to forum signature? (Re: Add banner to simple pages)

Hi Irving and WeatherCat cool-cats . . . . .  8)

I was able to follow your instructions and can now link to my banner with www.magpie-hill.com/weathercatbanner.jpg

I just tired to look at your banner, but I get a page not found error.  Is your banner a jpg or perhaps another format?

Now I am wondering how I can effectively use it for something cool.

One cool use of your banner is to include it in your signature of your forum.  I gave you rough instructions here:

http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=2267.msg21727#msg21727 (http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=2267.msg21727#msg21727)

Let us know if you need more information to make it work.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Now that you have WC uploading your banner, just add the code I posted <above (http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=934.msg21760#msg21760)> to whatever you have in the "Notes:" section of the WC Prefs->Simple Web->Text. If the sample in the Manual is any guide, WC constrains its iframes so that they appear after/under anything you enter in the "Notes:" area. You don't have a lot of control over where it goes on the page, of course. This might help you center the banner on whatever 'line' in ends up on.
Code: [Select]
<img style="margin: 0 auto;" src="WeatherCatBanner.jpg">Just copy this text and paste it into the "Notes:" area of the WC Prefs->Simple Web->Text. [removed link to the now castly photobucket.com site]

It seems to me that it would be a whole lot simpler to just use the custom pages, but if your preference is to redesign the wheel then with a COPY of the weather cat program, just right click and open package.  Go the to resources in the contents and the simple web pages are there.  Just add the WC banner command to one of the pages where you want it and try that.

Again, it would be so much simpler to use the custom pages.  You could just copy the resource html pages to your WCHTML folder and run the custom pages and they will be exactly the same as simple pages.

I have not tried this, but 5 minutes of checking it out shows that it should work just fine.

Hi Xair and Techno,

Tried adding the line from Xair to my text below, but it gave only a little blue square.

<H1>Data for Magpie Hill PWS  Location: Gross, Einsiedeln, Switzerland, Altitude: 908m, Location: 47.119 N, 8.772 E.  Webcam faces SE toward Sihlsee (889m) and Schwyzer Alps (2092m). Weather Instrument WS1080, Software on Mac: Weathercat 2.31, Camera Canon A510, Software gphoto2,  Wunderground PWS ID icantono2, WeatherCloud</H1>
<img style=?margin: 0 auto;? src=?WeatherCatBanner.jpg?>

Techno, where would I get such a copy of the program? Maybe not available to me.

Have yet to try the suggestions from the car guy in Orinda. But found that the caps in WeatherCatBanner are necessary. Try http://www.magpie-hill.com/WeatherCatBanner.jpg

Thanks for all the help.  Irving

<img style=?margin: 0 auto;? src=?WeatherCatBanner.jpg?>

Try
Code: [Select]
<img src="http://www.magpie-hill.com/WeatherCatBanner.jpg">instead.

Good Luck!

Thanks Reinhard, a full URL is always better. [tup] [blush]
Irving, that "little blue square" is your browsers way of saying, "I can't find that image!". ;) Reinhard's code should fix that.

Hi Xair and Techno,
Techno, where would I get such a copy of the program? Maybe not available to me.

What program are you speaking of?  I only spoke of the WC program.  If you have any Mac running WC, then you have everything you need.

Hi Techno,

I thought you meant I could modify the HTML code of the Simple Page. Or not?

Hi Techno,

Irving

I believe you could just modify the originals within the WC program itself or just copy them to your WCHTML folder location and turn off simple and turn on custom.

I do not understand how to get started with that. And I doubt that such modifications of the Simple Page are possible for a WC user. Would be interesting though.

You just simply right-click (option-click) on the WC program and "show package contents".  Open the "Contents" folder.  Open the "Resources" folder.  Open the"WeatherCat_html" folder and voila, there they are.

Dear Irving, X-Air, Techno, and WeatherCat self-expressionists, . . .

Have yet to try the suggestions from the car guy in Orinda. But found that the caps in WeatherCatBanner are necessary. Try http://www.magpie-hill.com/WeatherCatBanner.jpg

I see that you have a banner that works and you have also added it to you forum signature.

Congratulations!  [tup]

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

P.S. The trouble with being a car guy is you get stuck dealing with family cars.  Tomorrow I have to take my sister's car in . . . . .  ::)

I'm betting you have the following text in the WC Prefs->Simple Web->Text->"Notes:" area.
Code: [Select]
<H1>Data for Magpie Hill PWS  Location: Gross, Einsiedeln, Switzerland, Altitude: 908m,
Location: 47.119 N, 8.772 E.  Webcam faces SE toward Sihlsee (889m) and Schwyzer

Canon A510, Software gphoto2,  Wunderground PWS ID icantono2, WeatherCloud</H1>
<img style=?margin: 0 auto;? src=?WeatherCatBanner.jpg?>
Just change src="WeatherCatBanner.jpg" to:
src="http://www.magpie-hill.com/WeatherCatBanner.jpg".

That should make your Banner appear just below that text near the bottom of your page.

Thanks Xair. Just as you said. It works fine now with the banner in my Simple Web.

Idunn:

If you would rather center your banner, like everything else on the page is centered, change the following line:

Code: [Select]
<img style=?margin: 0 auto;? src="http://www.magpie-hill.com/WeatherCatBanner.jpg">
to

Code: [Select]
<P><CENTER><img src="http://www.magpie-hill.com/WeatherCatBanner.jpg"> </P>

@Blick
Not sure where those "?" characters in you first 'code' display come from. They don't display in my 'code' samples. "<CENTER>" is the old, non-HTML5/CSS way of centering stuff. It is actually deprecated. It only still works because many browsers are backwards compatible... for now.

What I provided is a way of 'embedding' a tiny bit of css directly into a line of html. It's not the best way, but it helps one learn the vastly larger powers of css over the limited styling capabilities of html. CSS is well worth some study. It's really no more difficult than html, anyway.

Thanks guys. I was just copying the CENTER command from the rest of his page. Simple Web uses it to center the page contents. At least in Safari, his banner is not centered but the rest of his page is.

So I think it's up tu Stu to maintenance his Simple Web to HTML5 and CSS - isn't it?  ;D

Stu,

I had to look that up "It's a fair cop guv." Dates back to a book called Raffles. Although don't think it really fits here.

I'd have to agree. It's not 'wrong'. Just not "modern"! Of course, not everything "modern" is 'right', either! ;) Not many on this side of the "pond" would use "guv". While we do have "governors", they aren't as common as they were in the UK! :)

The phrase also lead me to wonder about "cop" in terms of 'catching' as it relates to a policeman who is sometimes referred to as a "copper" due to the buttons on their uniforms that were often made of copper... Words are fascinating, in any language! [tup]
