Title: Wondering about wind chill
Post by: Mtn.Marty on December 23, 2012, 04:03:49 PM
Still a newby at this. I've noticed that on the Wundergound site, the calculation of the wind chill at my station varies from other neighboring stations. For example, yesterday my temp was ranging in the lower 20's F with a wind varying from 0 to 10 mph. The WC would be at say 20 and the air temp at 24. This would not change when the wind speed changed. My friends station ( 3 miles away) was showing similar temps and wind speed, but lower WC, which also did not seem to change with changes in wind speed. The only explanation I have is that maybe WC is calculated based on a daily average, rather than continuously changing with changes in WS.

Does my vantage Vue do the calks, does WeatherCat do the calks or does Wunderground do them?

Hi Marty
WeatherCat calculates the wind chill based on the temperature and wind speed it gets from your Vantage Vue and WU calculates it from the temperature and wind speed info that is sent to them from WeatherCat
I believe that WC calculates it from wind speed at 4 and above wind and temperatures below 50
For me it changes as the wind speed changes in the gauge window
Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply Randall. It helps.

I've found this interesting article about wind chill:
