First time for me - anemometer and wind vane are frozen due to ice, and no wind at the time to keep things moving up there.!
-
Although I don't recommend it, I used to have a real long pole and I could tab the cups and the wind vane to loosen them. The big hazard is that you can break them. Now I just wait for the sun to come out or the wind to cooperate

I can think of two options:
1. Move the Anemometer inside.
2. Move farther South!!! Soon!!! 😱 🥶

Dear ColdnFrosty, Weatheraardvark, X-Air, and WeatherCat station caregivers,

Sorry to hear that. It is the first time I've heard of anemometer components being locked up by ice. I'm sure it isn't very uncommon, but it must be somewhat rare to get just the right conditions to have ice form when there is absolutely no wind.
In California, the closest equivalent is spider webs:

At least in that case you can free your anemometer with a pole with little risk of damaging your instruments.
I hope that your anemometer has thawed out by the time you read this.

Temps have been hovering around 31.5º for the past 24 hrs. I took a look with binoculars and there was ice all over it. Partly sunny and 38º tomorrow to resolve it.

Sunday through next week , single digits, and below zero too here in Iowa. WTF? so much for the traditional January thaw. BUT we might have some sun and that always helps melt the ice on the anemometer. lol(1)

I've worried about the anemometer icing up, but so far it hasn't. Hopefully yours is now defrosted and functioning.

Frozen solid. But the blue skies brought the sun and some above freezing temps to get everything spinning again a short while later.
