Hi everybody!
This morning I found WeathrCat down. I tried to start it but a crash occurs at every attempt (the report is attached). If I disconnect the USB connection WeatherCat starts but if I connect USB and reconfigure the communication ports and restart it I still get the same crash (or other times it just doesn't respond). I checked the ports, I swapped them physically, I tested them with other devices, I reinstalled both the WC and the Sillab drivers ..... nothing to do.
Can anyone help me?
Federico

2 Suggestions: Have you tried using another USB cable?
When reinstalling drivers, it is usually best to remove all instances of the previous version. Option-clicking the black Apple menu item will change "About This Mac" to "System Information...". In the window that opens, you can see if you have more than one instance installed on your Mac.
Crash Reports: ~99.99% of the folks here are simply users of WC. Crash Reports are not designed for 'normal people'! cmu:-) The ~0.01% that can make use of that Crash Report is the developer. He has requested that Crash Reports be sent to him via email (weathercat_support@trixology.com).
There are three similar ways to get that Report in a format he can read/use:
- With the report is still visible on your Mac, you can copy the Crash Report with (command-A and command-C) , open TextEdit and paste it in.
- After you close that original window, find the Report via the Console. It will usually be in the "Crash Reports" section. Once you find the report, you can option-click the file and select one of the apps that can open it, including TextEdit.
- While in Console.app, you can also select the "View in Finder" menu item, select the file, option-click and select an app in which to view it. Now use the standard Select All/Copy/Paste commands.
Once you have the file saved in a file (plain text preferred) using one of the above methods, paste it into an email addressed to the developer. Please remember, WeatherCat is not how the developer makes a living, it is not his "day job" and he also has a family. ThU5:-)

Dear Federico, X-Air and WeatherCat troubleshooters,
It is just a guess, but I'm assuming you haven't changed anything in a long time. That strongly suggests that you have a corrupted preference file. Sadly this happens much more often than it should. So much so that Blick kindly wrote up a WeatherCat Wiki article on how to create and restore a backup of the WeatherCat preference file.
https://wiki.trixology.com/index.php?title=How_to_create_and_use_a_backup_of_your_WeatherCat_preferences_file (https://wiki.trixology.com/index.php?title=How_to_create_and_use_a_backup_of_your_WeatherCat_preferences_file)
If you don't already have a backup, you can use any other backup source such as a Time Machine backup. Just follow the instructions in the Wiki article on how to restore the file. If you don't you might end up with the same corrupted file because of Apple's dubious preference caching system.
Let us know if this solves your problem.
Cheers, Edouard

2 Suggestions: Have you tried using another USB cable?
Done. It was the first thing I did but unfortunately without success
When reinstalling drivers, it is usually best to remove all instances of the previous version. Option-clicking the black Apple menu item will change "About This Mac" to "System Information...". In the window that opens, you can see if you have more than one instance installed on your Mac.
I'll check but port and drivers (reinstalled AFTER the crash) are running well with other devices. But I'll check.
Done as you suggest before writing that post.
On other occasions I had limited myself to writing to Stu but last time he suggested me to post the problem also on the forum so that everyone could read the problem and possible solution. And so I did.
Please remember, WeatherCat is not how the developer makes a living, it is not his "day job" and he also has a family. ThU5:-)
I never thought about it ThU5:-)
Thanks for support......but I'm still looking to run WC again.

Hi Edouard and thanks in advance for your kind support.
I've tried to restore preferences file from Time Machine using a file coming from backup of few days ago when WC was running well. Unfortunately it doesn't have effetcs.
However I had not changed the preferences in the last weeks and WC ended to run last evening without a real (nor explicit) reason. Although I realize that a file can be corrupted even without direct intervention to modify it......
At this point I don't really know what try to do again in order to restart WC.
Thanks again!
Cheers, Federico

I try to describe the problem better:
1) WheatherCat ran regularly until September 13th at around 8.30pm and no changes were made in any way. The next morning I realized that he was down and it hasn't started again.
2) If I launch WeatherCat as usual with USB connected to mac, the icon jumps for several minutes but the program doesn't start generating a crash report (I've attached above)
3) If I unplug the USB and launch WeatherCat it starts but obviously does not communicate with Davis. At that point I connect the USB and ask to configure the communication ports. WeatherCat closes automatically. I run it again and WeatherCat opens the panel where I can set the weather station model and the SLAB_USBtoUART port. At the end I push DONE button.
4) WeatherCat starts and a few seconds later crashes again without I could realize on the log if there is a precise point where the crash occurs.
What have I already tried
1) replace USB cable
2) install new SilLab drivers
3) check if there were previous instances
4) install WeatherCat again
5) restore a backup of the preferences file from Time Machine
6) consult an exorcist ...
No Way
Text file with crash report attached
Thanks again in advance

SOLVED
In the list was missing #7: Restart Davis Station.
Don't ask me why but switching off and on again Davis VP2 now WheatherCat runs well. Sorry to disturb you and thanks....
-
Well, of course! When nothing you try works, you obviously need to try something else!! lol(1)
Seriously, a great and quite easy trouble-shooting idea! I'm sure if I stood outside for months/years outside, I'd be a little worse for the wear!! [lol] [coffee] [cold1] [cloudsun] [rainyluck]
A huge "thank you" for posting the solution!!! [cheer]

I love it when a WeatherCatter figures out a solution. Congratulations, and thanks for keeping us informed of your efforts, which will help someone else in the future.

Okay, congratulations on getting your station back in service! ThU5:-)
But, but, but . . . . . (https://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/scratch_head.gif) I've never heard of a problem like this were power cycling the Davis station itself solved the problem.
How old is your Davis station Federico?
We definitely need to add this to the possible remedies for folks with Davis stations.

I've never heard of a problem like this were power cycling the Davis station itself solved the problem.
How old is your Davis station Federico?
12 years but is still running well...... the only 2 troubles in time was:
1) In the last 2 years it has often appeared "low battery on station 1" message on console display. I've before changed battery without results and after replaced cap (with a bigger one) but I receive the same message even if there have never been any interruptions in the transmission and reception of data. So I don't care about it anymore.
2) 2 or 3 years ago I had a problem with the anemometer that no longer worked but I solved it by myself (and with the help of Google) by replacing the small internal sensor which cost a few euros. Not an easy job but with a little patience, it can be done by anyone.
For the rest, everything has always worked well and the Davis is quite reliable over time .... but I know that soon or late the station may need to be replaced.
As I said I don't know why there was that problem I described and after many various attempts remained to remove and restore power to the console as is generally done in all the gadgets that have a bizarre malfunction. It worked in this case too! :D
I do not know if it is a recommended procedure but it is at no cost and with no side effects .....
Thanks again for support and all the best!

Your station has given you very good service!

Okay, that is interesting. The only thing you might consider is replacing the solar panel. I don't believe they are very expensive and after 12 years it might not be providing enough power to recharge the super-capacitor.

This appears to be common defect in Davis anemometers. I've had to replace mine.
For the rest, everything has always worked well and the Davis is quite reliable over time .... but I know that soon or late the station may need to be replaced.
If your goal is simply to keep the station operating, you might be able to continue repairing it. That maybe the better choice at the moment, because there aren't any stations out there which look like a substantial improvement over the Davis Vantage Pro-2 line.

The reason I asked was that we had never seen a problem like this before that could be solved by power-cycling the console. However, after 12 years, a Davis console might need to be rebooted. I do know that WeatherCat picks up some data directly from the console instead of storing it on your hard drive. I learned this the hard way when I upgraded to a new Weather Envoy. Before power-cycling, it is probably a good idea to look up all the rainfall totals so that you can manually enter then again if need be. However, I don't know if there is anything you might lose by power-cycling the console. That is something for the WeatherCat community to keep an eye on.
Thanks for sharing your experiences Federico!

It's the next step... ;)

The VP2 is evidently still a reference in the semi-professional weather stations at the moment, both for the reliability of the measurements and for the duration. I don't know if a VP3 is planned but in the meantime buying a new VP2 would be a unexpected expense given the cost reached.
I saw an interesting all in one station that also has a lightning detector. It is called WeatherFlow Tempest. I have read some comments around and although it costs much less than Davis and is quite practical in the installation, there seems to be some problem with the rain gauge which is very sensitive but not accurate at all.
As often happens: you buy cheap, you buy twice. Often but not always...... :)
Cheers Edouard! ThU32:-)

Dear Edouard,
just to update you about "Low Battery on Station 1" warning on console (even if it's a topic already discussed several times).
Okay, that is interesting. The only thing you might consider is replacing the solar panel. I don't believe they are very expensive and after 12 years it might not be providing enough power to recharge the super-capacitor.
After changing the 123 battery a couple of times and replacing the "supercap" with a new a 25F capacitor (which should therefore keep a higher charge than the standard 10F) I bought a new solar panel for about 50 € and mounted few days ago. The only gain was on the aesthetic aspect: I waited a few days to see if the situation improved but on the console the message there is that the same warning advicing the battery of the ISS is low and WC sends me a similar alarm every night at midnight. By checking the diagnostic screens of the VP2, the data packets arrives without errors and the signal is more than good. At this point I decided to leave things as they are because obviously it is a false alarm.
Have a nice weekend.
Cheers, Federico

It is definitely curious and honestly has to be a sign of a problem of some sort. It reminds me of my miseries in 2014 as chronicled in this thread:
https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=1434.msg12044#msg12044 (https://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=1434.msg12044#msg12044)
I agree that for now ignoring the problem is the path of least resistance. However, you might need to replace your ISS circuit board sometime in the future.
Thanks for keeping us updated!
