Title: New station records for hottest temperatures?

Dear WeatherCat weather watchdogs,

What's the point of having a weather station if you can't observe interesting weather phenomena.  Alas, you cannot always watch from a comfortable distance.  There have been unbearable heat waves all over the world.  This week has been the turn of the Western United States, including California.  Yesterday, a 2 year old record for highest recorded temperature at Canebas weather station fell.  Here is the new record:

Has anyone else observed a new station temperature record this summer?  If you would like to fetch the previous high, this is very easy to do with WeatherCat.  From the Statistics menu item (under the Tools menu,) press the Query button at the bottom.  That will bring up the following dialog:

Enter on the top field the date of your best guess as to when your station went into operation (it doesn't have to be exact.)  In the bottom field enter the date of the day before your current high temperature record.  You will see that I had these fields reversed and generated an error - oops!  :-[

You can the press the Find button to get the previous record:

As you can see, 2020 was a very hot summer for Canebas weather station.

So, . . . . does anyone else have a new record that they would like to share?

We've been somewhat bypassed by these high temps, at least at my ISS. I think it has so much shade from the tall (and still growing!!) trees surrounding our area.

That's hot!  [sweat2]

I haven't had a record anything in a long while. Only the wind, and I know we've had higher than that when the derecho came though several years ago, but nothing was recorded.

Oh, yesterday was 11 years since I started recording statistics! Missed noticing that.

Highest recorded wind speed: 73.0 MPH on Oct 26, 2019

Wettest day on record: Jan 13, 2013 with 5.58 in of rain.

Sunniest day on record: May 22, 2016 with 17.0 hours of sunshine.


This year June and July were hot, August was milder.
Hottest month I've recorded is August 2007 with 23 days of temps at or above 100 degrees.

We got within 2°F of the all-time high temperature record for three out of the last four days running, but it has cooled off now. This is the hottest September we've ever had for consecutive days above 80°F with eight. Here's the extended record table for my station in the mountains of northeastern Utah.

Hahahaha. You are correct, but now I have read all about his problem of induction. Thanks for educating me on this shortcoming of my post-high school education. I do have a masters degree, but somehow missed out on Mr. Hume until now.

Indeed only philosophers are likely to have heard of David Hume.  However, his criticism remains valid and basically undermines all the empiricism in the scientific method.  Worse still, Nelson Goodman creates an even worse conundrum for the scientific method with his "grue paradox." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_riddle_of_induction)

Still, Hume himself proposes a resolution to his own dilemma that I suppose now makes him turn in his grave.  He simply claimed that human beings are creatures of habit, and even if some behaviors are irrational, we continue to persist in them.  The usual example being to expect the sun to rise tomorrow - even if Hume basically destroys any rational basis for believing that.

Today we tacitly assume that science is the paradigm of rationality.  Yet, even science is a "creature of habit."  It habitually ignores the philosophical objections to scientific methodology like those of David Hume and continues as the social practice that it actually turns out to be.  The worry is what happens when that social practice indeed fails to capture some essential aspect of the reality that is important for the human race.  It seems clear that SARS-CoV-2 should have been a serious wake-up call to the academic and intellectual community to reconsider the importance of rigorous scientific methodology.  Alas thus far,  science as a social practice persists in its dubious habits - whatever the peril this might represent to the human race.
