I'm continuously having WeatherCat quit unexpectedly however the program reopens and starts logging again. Sometimes I get a warning message that it quit unexpectedly and other times I realize it quit due to the data counts resetting to 0 on the gauges. I've updated to WC 3.2.0 to see if this issue would be resolved but it hasn't. I've turned off the Vantage Vue console for 20 minutes, replaced the batteries, reseated the WeatherLink adapter, changed the USB cables, and verified latest Silab driver is installed all to no avail.

Can anyone offer any insight, or other troubleshooting tips, per the abbreviated crash report below?

Unfortunately, your abbreviated crash report is too short to provide any useful information. Could you instead retrieve and attach to this thread the actual binary file that is the crash report? Instructions on how to do this are to be found on this posting:

I've tried your link several times but the qsatoolworks site doesn't load. I'm able to locate the crash file with a .ips extension but it sounds like you're looking for a .crash extension. Is this correct?

Any help you can provide in getting the correct report would be appreciated as the issues is still occuring with the WC program.

Sorry, indeed the old webpage is no longer accessible. I updated that posting with a Apple support page link:

In order to make a copy of the crash report, you will need to use the Choose File > Reveal in Finder feature of the Console. Once the crash report is revealed in a Finder window, you can then make a copy of it to send to Stu or attach to a forum posting.

Let me know if that is now sufficient to access that crash report or if you need further assistance.

Unfortunately, the new crash report format is much less informative than the old. I cannot ferret out any useful information without the full Xcode development environment. So alas we will need to wait for Stu. He is extremely busy at the moment, so if you don't see a reply on this thread after a while, you might have to contact Tixology technical support directly. Still experiencing the ongoing crash issues, typically 3 to 5 times a day, and did some more digging around. I found in the system.log, within console, that I received a message at the same time I had a crash report.

I had three crashes today at which time these messages were posted in system.log:

Sep 13 12:29:17 BAR-Mini WeatherCat[3638]: Vantage rain collector is set to 0.01 inch
Sep 13 15:20:29 BAR-Mini WeatherCat[9026]: Vantage rain collector is set to 0.01 inch

Could this help anyone pinpoint the cause of the crash? I've attached the corresponding .ips crash reports for reference.

I wish I had something more constructive to say. Other WeatherCat users are having success with the newer Macs and the M1 chip. I don't know if anyone of those folks has a Vantage Vue though. I cannot make much sense of the crash reports, but I can see that the failure is in kernel and Apple library code. That still doesn't explain why other WeatherCat users aren't having this problem, but it does appear Apple bit off more than it could easily chew in the transition to its own microprocessor architecture. If this is some sort of sporadic issue that Apple should fix and hasn't, there may be very little Stu can do about it. I see that you attempted to contact Trixology technical support back in June. Did you get any reply?

Thanks for the crash report - unfortunately there isn’t much to go on apart from an Apple worker thread called to terminate the app during an HTTP connection (there’s no WeatherCat code in that thread so we can’t pinpoint why - it may be an OS issue).

Can you provide more information about what you're seeing, in particular your station, sensors fitted, any sensors out of order, station connection, networking setup, what build of WeatherCat you are running, when the problem started and how frequently it happens?

Sorry to see that you are struggling with such a difficult problem. I double-checked and there are other WeatherCat users with a Vantage Vue, M1 Mac, and running macOS Monterey. Stu's reply does give something to look into through. What other applications do you run on your Mac? Does it appear that these crashes occur at particular times in the day or when you use for Mac for particular activities? There are reports of WeatherCat users running into application conflicts that can cause WeatherCat to not run properly. In your case, it might be another application that you are using that is causing the WeatherCat crashes.

Sorry that isn't all that much help, but it is the most likely scenario at the moment.

Well here is my crash report from my M1 24" iMac Os12.6 using WeatherCat 3.2 that keeps crashing. It was crashing with 3.1.3 before and I tried 3.2 (based o a suggestion here) and hoped this would resolve the issue - no better. Crash report below which I just sent separately by email to Trixology support although I received no response from support when I fwd'd my 3.1.3 crash report.

Forgot to set the "notify me" in the email setting.

Thankfully roblem has been resolved by Trixology support . It turns out that my WeatherCat email was trying to send an email out and it would not work. This is interesting because I'm using the same settings on this Monterey (12.6)-based system as I am on a second home system using old, old Catalina. I had set up with the same port – 587 – user – xxx@me.com and authentication checked and one (Catalina) sends out emails and WeatherCat my home (Monterey 12.6) gives me only a spinning wheel. I have not changed the email settings in a couple of years on either computer. The only thing I can understand that may have caused the problem at home is upgrading to Monterey 12.6. It started shortly after that when WeatherCat started crashing. Now when I try put the exact same settings in the home computer all I get is a spinning wheel. I actually related this whole story in another email that I saw today. So I don't want to duplicate it. However, the one thing that I've always had a problem with with WeatherCat is setting up the email. It seems that every time I do it - and it's not very often - it's like starting all over again. I'm not sure what's going to work. I also noticed someone just put up poll as to what port people use. So I'm assuming this is a general problem.

Sorry for my tardiness in replying to your email. I'll try to remember to check the "notify" button in the future.

Yep. After I opened up Xcode which had already been updated at least for macOS 12.3 and iOS 16 (it showed.) I went to set up email and text in both worked perfectly out of the gate. Thanks very much for id-ing this!

UPDATE:

Appears I stumbled upon the issue during hurricane Ian. I had to shut down an old iMac that apparently was still running WC in the background. Since the storm the old iMac has been off and the Mac Mini WC program has not crashed once. Could there have been a conflict on the network with two computers running the same program? Who knows but at least my issue is currently cleared up after several months. I'll let you all know if something changes.

Thanks for the update. The answer is yes. What you should do is run the macOS client on one computer and WeatherCat.app on the other one, rather than run two instances of WC at the same time. Congratulations on discovering a potential conflict.
