Title: Backup Failed
Post by: Blicj11 on February 18, 2022, 05:37:20 PM
Today I have a WeatherCat error message I have never before encountered.

Backup failed. Error was 'Doesn't Exist'. Path was '/Users/TheGenius/Library/WeatherCatData/Location1/Imagery/Channel2/Imagery_06_32_20_08_20_.jpg'

That file is a satellite imagery jpg from 22 August 2020.
Unless someone has a better idea, I am going to do nothing and see what happens tonight. If I get the error again, I will probably copy the jpg from an earlier backup and paste it in the WCData file where it used to reside. So Edouard, I hope you or someone else has a better idea before I start messing around not knowing what I am doing.

Does that file still exist somewhere/anywhere on your drive, even the Trash? Unless you've done a an actual "Delete Trash" it should still be in there even if you accidentally a "Move to Trash" (command+delete). I think the Finder defaults to automatically deleting Trashed items after 30 days. Of course, your being at a high altitude may have made it easier for "cosmic rays" to mess with your drives! :o [banghead]

Dear Blick, X-Air, and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

Today I have a WeatherCat error message I have never before encountered.

[wink] . . . . .  Of course!  WeatherCat is a feline after all.   [cat]  It always has a few new tricks up its sleeve!  . . . . .

Besides, . . . . if TheGenius is the WeatherCat user,
(http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/scholarly_teacher.gif) then certainly TheGenius should be able to figure this one out - right? . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/scratch_head.gif)
. . . . .  lol(1)

Okay seriously, . . . .

So Edouard, I hope you or someone else has a better idea before I start messing around not knowing what I am doing.

A better idea?  Well let's not be greedy.  However, when files mysteriously disappear, my first thought is corruption in the file system catalog.  So my first instinct would be to run some sort of diagnostic.  In fact, I'm way behind on Techtool Pro.  I'd better upgrade soon!  So I suppose your failure was sponsored by Micromat!

I would run Disk First Aid unless you already own Techtool Pro, and see what it reports.  If you own Techtool Pro, that's usually better at finding problems, although Apple has sometime fixed what Techtool Pro couldn't.

That would be my first suggestion.

Do let us know what you discover!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Thanks for the suggestion, Edouard.

I ran Disk Utility First Aid. It ran successfully but did not log any repairs. However, at the scheduled time this morning, 4:00, WeatherCat's backup ran with no error messages. In looking at the Location1/Imagery/Channel2 directory, that file now magically reappears, as it does in this morning's backup. So I suspect First Aid applied the proper bandaid and my triage for this issue is now complete.

Edouard, I hope your healing is also progressing, however, slowly it likely feels.

Dear Blick and WeatherCat troubleshooters,

In looking at the Location1/Imagery/Channel2 directory, that file now magically reappears, as it does in this morning's backup. That is curious since First Aid should report any repairs it makes.  However, don't argue with success!

In the meantime, I took the warning seriously and paid to upgrade to the current version of Techtool Pro.  I was only 4 versions behind!   Now I need to find a quiet moment to take my computer down and install it on main hard drive and my rescue partition.

Edouard, I hope your healing is also progressing, however, slowly it likely feels.

Well, yes I am healing but unfortunately this reconstructive surgery is completed in stages and it involves more cutting.  Surgery #2 is this Tuesday, so I'll starting the healing curve for a second time.  I am most certainly glad that I'll end up with a decent looking nose at the end of this process, but the process itself is not easy!
