Title: Power and Interweb Loss
Post by: xairbusdriver on December 13, 2021, 03:17:29 AM
Severe line of storms came though very early Saturday morning. Had been tracking them for hours as they marched across Arkansas. Of course, I did not think of turning the Mac mini off before turning in for the night. [banghead]

I were awakened when my CPAP tried to suffocate me. But I was not yet bothered by the thunder as I do not sleep with my hearing "aids". [lol]

However, SWMBO, kindly asked me if I could please stop the incessant 'beeping' noise. "Sure!" I knew it was the UPS in the computer room! Happy to be so helpful with only one eye awake, I simply pressed the On/Off button. We didn't need it 'powering' anything since my iMac was already shut down.

SWMBO said thanks, but how about silencing the second beeping noise? [rolleyes2] Oh yeah! I have a much small UPS powering the Mac mini so short power outages won't stop it and it's weather work. Same step; push the On/Off button! Silence at last, at least from inside the house!

Internet was off much longer than the electricity. Comcast claimed it would be fixed about 2:30 Sunday morning. They must use the same algorthyms as the Left Coast El Ninö forecats! Although the text I received said Internet access was fixed at ~2:50am, it was still dead when we left for church at 10:15. However, by the time we returned, it was working! ThU5:-)

However, I noticed that my web site was reporting it has been lat updated at 1:xx am on Dec 11! [banghead] Guess I should turn that thing back on? [blush]

Long story a bit short, I've just spent several hours trying to get WC to successfully test its FTP connection. Changed the FTP password at Host, tried adding "public_html" (and other things!) to the path, prepared to start a support ticket, pulled a few hairs... Nothing worked!

I finally saw that the little WiFi Menu Bar icon on the mini was showing 'no bars'! WHAT! Turned WiFi Off and back On. Now I get an alert saying another machine is using the same IP address: 10.0.1.3. How can that happen?! Sure enough, that address was being used by my iMac! I supposed that Restarting the mini should cure that. NOPE!

I then found that the Network TCP/IP setting for the mini was set to Manually Configure IPv4 and it had 10.0.1.3 as the desired(?) address! I changed it 10.0.1.6, tried the WC FTP Test and passed!!!

The free app LanScan (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lanscan/id472226235?mt=12) was very helpful in showing all the devices on the network so I could pick one that was free!

Don't ask me why I had set the IP address to Manual! But I left it that way in case I remember/discover the reason! cmu:-)

My approach to assigning IP addresses is just the opposite to yours because I enjoy making the most of my OCD. Most of my devices have assigned static IP addresses which allows me to always know where I can find each device on my network. Works quite well. I go to church anyway, even when the network works as advertised.

If I had a penny for every time someone said they think I have OCD...

I'd have 1,526 pennies.
