Hi all,
Edouard, not to hijack your autumn thread I thought it would make sense to add a winter thread, too.
I would like to share a nice time-lapse with you, but I think it isn't possible to put it in here just like a picture, so I beg you to click on the following link:
http://wetter.unterwurzacher.at/zeitraffer/timelapse_nov9th.mp4
It will open in a new tab in your browser.
Enjoy!

Very nice time-lapse Reinhard. Stunning look at the stars overnight.
-
Well done indeed Reinhard! I know how challenging it can be to pull off the night-dawn-daylight transition.
I do astrophotography, but only occasional timelapse or nightscape photography. In fact my weather fascination results primarily from the need to know the weather conditions for doing visual or astrophotography. I'm sure there are many WC users that have weatherstations to support the operations of their home or remote observatories.

Dear Reinhard, Blick, Carl, and WeatherCat admirers of lovely images,
Edouard, not to hijack your autumn thread I thought it would make sense to add a winter thread, too.
On the contrary let me thank you! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/thanks_sign.gif)
The idea is for everybody to contribute and winter comes to your place much sooner than mine.

Thanks for sharing!

P.S. I just looked up what SMF developers have to say about embedded videos. Basically they won't support it because there isn't a standard protocol and every video upload site is different. There are SMF extensions that Stu could install, but I don't know if there is enough interest to ask Stu to go through that hoop.

Many small sites control the size of images (static or video [if those are even allowed]). Images take up gobs (sorry for the technical jargon) of web space on servers (particularly multi-megabyte, full-screen images! [rolleyes2] ). Many forums even request you link to images instead of posting them at their site. Stu seems to be able to pay for enough web space that he has not seen the need to ask for these kinds of things... so far. ThU5:-) That may be because he uses his own hardware. OTOH, we're not paying him, even for his coding work very often... As far as I know, the WC software is definitely not his main source of income! [computer]
There are so many free image upload sites! Personally, I like to upload images to those, so I don't use any space at a forum. The images will still show here, but they won't take any any room at all on Stu's hosting servers. :)
-
Xair, Edouard, Blick, Carl,
I think that is what we all do - only a link to an image that then is embedded here in the forum. For me I use my own webspace to host the images (and even the videos) and with the *insert images* I can tell the forum from where it should load the picture to display it.
But I think you already know... ;D ;D ;D

Hi Reinhard,
I am curious how such night timelapses can be made. In other words, please tell me how you did it. In looking for the gphoto2 stuff I remember coming across the making of timelapse videos. One possibility I can think of would be to program my gphoto2 to save enough shots and then use them in iMovie to make a video. I am still very happy with my gphoto2 webcam setup and thankful for your help in getting it going.
Hope all is well with you, Irving
-
Hi Irving,
as you assumed correct I tell gphoto to save every shot taken (every 5 minutes) under a different name, in my case date_time.jpg (looks like 20161101_0015.jpg), so I can easily find for example all pictures taken at a certain day (20161110_0002.jpg till 20161110_2358.jpg). Then I grab those pics manually, import them into iMovie and let it make the time lapse. A bit of work, indeed.
Hope this helps,
-
Hi Folks,
Thought I would try to use my WC-saved webcam photos to make a daylong time-lapse video. About 160 photos from a recent cloudless winter day were used, dawn to dusk. WC saves every 10 min I believe, if you check the correct box. It was easy to drag them into iMovie and adjust the best durations, here 0.5s photo duration with the same for dissolved crossover transitions. The results can be seen on Youtube here
https://youtu.be/saJEnv8NuOg
Nothing spectacular here but the method works.
Next I want to try to get my gphoto2 controlled webcam system to save all the photos directly to my Mac. Now I have them saved every minute by replacing.
Regards, Irving

WC Prefs->Webcam->Web-cam Enabled->Capture Options->Capture Image Every: (5 through 30 seconds, 1 through 30 minutes) Be aware that more frequent captures can drastically increase your bandwidth use, possibly causing FTP Overdrive problems.
It is sometimes amazing what one may find in an app's Prefs. The second, if not the first thing to examine at in every app (including after an update). ThU32:-) [rockon] [cheer] [computer] :)

Nicely done, Irving.

Dear Irving, X-Air, Blick, and WeatherCat shutterbugs,
Thanks for sharing your video attempts. You certainly have the great view to experiment with.
In the meantime I have a picture that I swear (cross my heart) I took this morning:
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Wild-Flowers/Scenes-of-Winter-2017/i-MjnxWHk/0/XL/Tulip%20tree%20blooming%20in%20December%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Wild-Flowers/Scenes-of-Winter-2017/i-MjnxWHk/A)
If you check even the EXiF data backs me up.
Yes indeed those are tulip tree blooms showing up. Normally they are early if they arrive before mid-February.
So if you feel a bit confused about the climate, at least you aren't alone - even the plants can't seem to get with the program!
Cheers, Edouard [cheers1]

This is how I had to do snow removal yesterday. We have received 88 inches (2.24 metres) of snow so far this month, containing 3.52 inches (8.94 cm) of water. This is the highest monthly snowfall I have experienced here. Mother Nature is pretty impressive.
-
Blick,
Please tell me that's your tractor and you are driving it! I want one! We don't get much snow, but I want one anyway!

I wouldn't even want to pay for this to be done, much less the 100+ thousand dollars for the machine and another $40,000 for the front end loader! "Mother Nature" is trying to tell you something, if you need this kind of equipment! And it ain't "Welcome!" cmu:-)

Dear Blick, Grand, X-Air, and WeatherCat fans of serious horsepower . . . . .

My thought was just the opposite! I hope you don't need to own something like that to live where you are at!
In my book that would be "goin' about it da' hard way!"
When I need adrenaline kicks I'll just take out my 500 horsepower trusty wagon for a spin! (http://www.canebas.org/Automotive/V8_Buick/Misc/Biquette_V8_Buick_signature.gif)

Ha ha ha. The tractor belongs to my neighbour. He was helping me out of a jam with my wee snowblower. See attached for my normal rig, taken on Christmas Eve before it really started to snow. I had just run over a plastic sled that my granddaughter left out in the driveway to be covered up with 4 inches of snow. Where I was standing in the Christmas photo is now under 6 feet of snow.

See attached for my normal rig,
Ooooh! Another nice rig. "Weather people are well equipped." :)

Here is something different I will share with anyone who might care. This is a link to a 30-second video that my son took at our place on Christmas Night with his drone. He and I are standing together in two sequences. He shot 15 minutes of footage to come up with 30 seconds of pretty cool winter visuals.

Dear WeatherCat observers of . . . . "Winter" !?!?!??!? ???
This morning I was taking my daily walk when I saw . . . . this:
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Wild-Flowers/Scenes-of-Winter-2017/i-kdcfKgX/0/XL/Plum%20trees%20in%20bloom-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Wild-Flowers/Scenes-of-Winter-2017/i-kdcfKgX/A)
No kiddin' those are plum trees blooming. It is something like 6 weeks early. Now should this photo go into a new topic for Spring? Well, here is another photo taken at about the same time:
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Wild-Flowers/Scenes-of-Winter-2017/i-P4x9FNb/0/XL/Little%20waterfall-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Wild-Flowers/Scenes-of-Winter-2017/i-P4x9FNb/A)
Even in California we aren't even close to the end of Winter yet. Moreover, I double-checked the temperatures and as I recalled we are still running about 6˚ below normal for January. So it isn't warmth and certainly not sunshine that has stimulated these trees to bloom. So what's left? My guess is that it the abundant rainfall and probably nutrients that have been washed to the roots by that rainfall. It is certainly a most surprising development!
Go figure!! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/scratch_head.gif)
Cheers, Edouard

Beautiful spring photos. Still winter here. Attached are some action photos of an ice dam pulling down all my gutters and snapping the heat tape cable one week go today.
Part 1.
-
Part 2
-
Is that bent looking object what used to be a gutter? Not sure who that is staring at the roof, but I'd suggest at least a hard hat and maybe an armored vehicle!!
-
Ha ha ha. That's me looking up in total amazement after all the chaos had died down.
-
Dear Blick, X-Air, and WeatherCat observers of what the weather dishes out
Beautiful spring photos.
Uh, perhaps that is what Spring looks like in Utah, but it ain't what is supposed to be happening on January 23 in California!
Still winter here. Attached are some action photos of an ice dam pulling down all my gutters and snapping the heat tape cable one week go today.
Isn't it great to have security cameras monitoring the place? It isn't like you are likely to forget the incident anytime soon, but if you want to relive it, you can just "play it back" anytime you feel like. Aside for the potential bragging rights, I have a feeling you won't be replaying that video anytime soon! [banghead]
I do hope the temporary repairs are holding up and that when Spring finally does arrive in Utah, that the permanent repairs won't be too painful.
Cheers, Edouard
-
Thank you, mate. I wanted to post the video from the security cams, but I cannot find it. I mean, it's there, I just can't find it. I have downloaded it from the Security System DVR, but have no idea how it is named or where the download went. Have searched hi and lo and it remains a mystery. The Manual is written for Windows so no help there. Maybe by Spring...
-
Did you include "Massive", "Glacial Calving" in your search terms? lol(1) If you're luck, the date/time is embedded in the 37 randomly selected "name". [rolleyes2]

Hi folks,
Blooming branches here too. January has been the coldest month in Switzerland in 30 years.
Regards, Irving
-
Nicely done, Irving.
Here is a today's snow clearing episode.
-
Dear Irving, Blick, and WeatherCat observers of the turning seasons,
Blooming branches here too. January has been the coldest month in Switzerland in 30 years.
;) . . . Uh, not the same kind of blooming Irving! ;D
Believe it or not there is a third plum tree in that area that has started to bloom. What makes it even more strange is that all these trees are in the shelter of much taller trees at the edge of a creek. Other nearby plum trees that have sunshine show absolutely no signs of blooming. It has to be the proximity to that creek that is in part responsible for the early blooming.
Here is a today's snow clearing episode.
I'm afraid we are in the same boat. The extra moisture will be greatly appreciated come summer, but for now all the storms is just that much more hassle.
Cheers, Edouard
