Title: The Sky
Post by: Blicj11 on May 31, 2016, 09:08:30 AM
Stayed up tonight to see Mars. It is closer to the Earth than anytime since 2005. I could see it easily with the naked eye and determine that it has a red hue. Looking at it through my Nikon Monarch 8x42 binoculars was also fairly cool. Jupiter was also visible, much brighter, but not red.

And you're closer than any of us. Lol! Probably have really clear air as well. We were under cloud cover here.

You are dead on, mate. We are at 8300 feet (2530 metres) here and the nights are generally clear. In addition, we do not have light pollution from any city. You will be able to see these two planets for several days so hopefully you will get a chance. Last night was supposed to be the brightest, but we have been looking at them for a week now.

Dear Blick, Herb, Randall, and WeatherCat visual astronomers,

Stayed up tonight to see Mars. It is closer to the Earth than anytime since 2005. I could see it easily with the naked eye and determine that it has a red hue. Looking at it through my Nikon Monarch 8x42 binoculars was also fairly cool. Jupiter was also visible, much brighter, but not red.

Darn it!  (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/D'oh.gif)  A little over 10 years ago I bought myself a 6" lightweight "kick-around" telescope precisely because my first telescope was too heavy and clumsy to use.

Sigh, this was is still a little to heavy and clumsy to use.  Worse it can be computer-controlled but that's even more complex and clumsy.  So, after a day that was a little too hot - I just went to sleep!  [bed]

Oh well, . . . . Edouard  :-[
