Hi.
I've upgraded my old iMac 21.5 to new 27" and now I'm running WC 2 (thanks Stu!).
But now when WC generates all dials picture ALLDIALS.JPG (from DALLC$ TAG) to send it to my custom web page, the image size is 1716 × 768 and not 858 × 364 so web page lost normal proportions with little text and big dials.
I don't know how to change image size in order to have a "normal" web page aspect as was before upgrade.
Thanks in advance for support and best regards.

Hi Federico and WeatherCat lovers of that "new Mac smell. . . . "

Congratulations . . . . [tup]

Unfortunately I don't have a clue how to fix it, but I do see another strange symptom. Your banner is now 1000 by 160 pixels. Normally banners are 500 by 80 pixels. I have no idea why your banner would mysteriously double in both dimensions.
Could this be something odd about Retina display Mac? Anybody else have some experiences with the newer Macs that can offer some thoughts on this problem?
Confused, . . . . Edouard

Hi Edouard! How are you?
It could be a kind of....... Big Mac effect? [roll]
All images generated are now double size. It's a iMac 27" 5k if it helps........
I could not wait to have a new Mac and WC 2 but the first result for now is that the images have risen, WC hangs 3-4 times a day and still not be able to send updates to Twitter and Facebook (Sylvester doesn't see Twitter account on System Preferences of El Capitan).
I'll have to read many forum posts backlog in the coming days ......
Thanks for support. ;)

Hi Federico and WeatherCat believers in "more is better" . . . .
Hi Edouard! How are you?
Well, I"m up to my neck fuel injection teething issues for my trusty wagon and we are about to have a heatwave. Forecast high for Wednesday is 90˚ F (32˚ C) - For the first week of April? :o

You might need to send an email directly to Stu and ask him if the new Mac high resolution displays could be causing this. I've noticed that software is reporting itself to be "retina display compatible," but I didn't know what changes were required. Perhaps WeatherCat isn't retina display compatible.
I could not wait to have a new Mac and WC 2 but the first result for now is that the images have risen, WC hangs 3-4 times a day.
If you can, try to take a sample of WeatherCat when it is in a hung state and email it to Stu. There are the instructions on how to do that:
https://support.omnigroup.com/sample-osx/ (https://support.omnigroup.com/sample-osx/)
That would help Stu understand if perhaps there is some sort of hardware incompatibly between these new iMacs and WeatherCat.
and still not be able to send updates to Twitter and Facebook (Sylvester doesn't see Twitter account on System Preferences of El Capitan).
Unfortunately this is an Apple OS X bug. Stu has been keeping us up to date on this problem on this thread:
http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=1803.msg16468#msg16468 (http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=1803.msg16468#msg16468)
Apple has been really sloppy on their connectivity to social media services. Stu's first attempt to create a companion application for social media was supposed to send information to Facebook and Twitter, but there were bugs in Apple's interface to Facebook, so Stu had to abandon that part of the application. Now the Twitter portion of the Apple Interface is also broken. I remember when Stu got started on this project he said he wanted some "easy programming for a change." Sure hasn't worked out that way . . . . :(
Please to touch base with Stu, there appears to be something odd about how WeatherCat is interacting with your new iMac.
Cheers, Edouard [cheers1]

As usual.....
But Retina is a type of display just an output device. SW compatible with Retina perhaps only has a resolution that it can be displayed in UltraHD. It seems strange that WC generates images with twice the size just because there is a high-resolution monitor in the system. Or is the system that doubles the size of the images to fit its display ....?

I've read the thread and I'm waiting with patience for Apple debug. I was waiting with impatience for WC2 with SocialCat hoping to post weather data just triggering a switch in a panel. I was disappointed when I saw Sylvester in the folder and I realized that it was not possible to set up the account from the system (though it would be enough to do manually ... or not?) I looked for information and found to be incompatible with El Capitan
Please to touch base with Stu, there appears to be something odd about how WeatherCat is interacting with your new iMac.
I definitely will do it! ;)
Thanks (as ever) Edouard for your support and Good Luck for your fuel injection and for Global Warming (here yesterday was 27°C....80.5°F and it's just april 5th.....but we are waiting for worsening weather with thunderstorms and drastic reduction in temperatures in the next days)

Hello Federico,
I've replied to your email, but I'll copy it here as well.
The hangs are because your Mac is going to sleep. When it wakes, the SiliconLabs driver is not waking up which is causing the hang. Set it so just the display goes to sleep but not the computer.
????????
For the images being double size, it isn?t a problem I?ve seen before, but try creating a new WeatherCat preferences file - if you?ve brought it over from your old Mac, there could be data in the that is causing a problem.
To create a new preferences file:
Quit WeatherCat.
Access your preferences folder by using the Finder's Go->Go To Folder... menu command and enter:
~/Library/Preferences/
Scroll down the list of preferences files until you find the one named:
com.trixology.weathercat.plist
Delete (or rename) this file then reboot the machine and launch WeatherCat.
Note that the reboot after removing the old preferences file is important - without this, the old settings may hang about in memory.
Note that all your preferences will be reset to factory defaults, so make a note of any settings you need to re-enter such as the latitude/longitude etc. before doing this. Also note that it is very important to reboot the machine after removing the existing preferences file. If the settings aren?t set back to factory defaults when you relaunch WeatherCat, then repeat the procedure.
---------
For Sylvester, there is a debug command you can enter at the terminal which may work - open terminal.app and enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.accountsd ACOutputLevel 7 && killall -9 accountsd
then launch Sylvester, with any luck it?ll now see your account information.
Apple have a bug for this, but are having trouble fixing the issue.
-
If the problem with the large graphics is still present after replacing the preferences file, try quitting WeatherCat, get info on it in the Finder and look for check-box called 'Open In Low Resolution'. If it's there, tick it then relaunch WeatherCat.

Howdy Federico, Stu, and WeatherCat users whose life is completely run by software!
Thanks (as ever) Edouard for your support and Good Luck for your fuel injection
Believe it or not, the process is literally coming up with the optimal program to keep the engine properly tuned! I hook up my MacBook to the fuel injection computer, I take a log of how the engine is performing, and I send that info to the fellow who sold me the fuel injection system. He then adjusts the program that controls the engine and I upload the revised program to the fuel injection computer. I then run the car for a while, and as needed, take some more logs and the cycle repeats!
I never thought I would be using software to control the engine in a 50 year old car!
. . . . and for Global Warming (here yesterday was 27°C....80.5°F and it's just april 5th.....but we are waiting for worsening weather with thunderstorms and drastic reduction in temperatures in the next days)
The weather doesn't sound pleasant where you are either. Take it easy Federico!
I've replied to your email, but I'll copy it here as well.
Thanks Stu for coming to the rescue! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/thanks_sign.gif)
At least your Land Rover doesn't ask you to debug the software tuning its engine!

I have not had time to replace the preferences and tried only to follow your suggest ticking check-box "Open in Low Resolution": now the images are generated with the right size .... (see the banner above)
Thanks Stu !!!
P.S. I am ashamed publicly because WeatherCat hang because the Mac was in sleep mode...... >:(

I know the feeling, I've had a few of those "senior moments" here on the forum and managed to show my backside for all to see. Fortunately (for my own self esteem), the forum members are kind. ;)
-
I can say in my defense that the old Mac regularly went into sleep mode ever 15 min of inactivity (not monitor stop but system stop) and WeatherCat (or better SiliconLab driver) continued running in background both communicating with Davis that generating and sending web pages ....or it remained awake for 11 years making me believe that he slept!!! [sleep] [biggrin]

Not to make too big a point about the banner size problem...
I notice the banner is still showing double-sized as I write this.
I'm wondering what the update time setting you have in the Banner Generator dialog. Your post #8 has a date/time of "Today at 12:20:54 AM". your last post #12 shows "Today at 08:13:08 AM". I see no changes in the reported data in that almost 8 hours time period. Not sure how you might have set more than 2 hours in the Banner dialog. I'm using 5 minutes, myself.
1. Are you, by any chance, uploading/FTPing the banner manually?
2. Are you using something other than WC to do that for you?

I've checked twice and the banner size both in my "save" folder and in the web site folder is 500x80.
The banner is automatically updated and uploaded by WeatherCat every 5 minutes.
Please, try to delete your browser cash and check it again..... ;)

-
Federico, the banner size is fine. @xairbusdriver needs to refresh the screen for it to show properly, as the banners stay in cache.
-
That brings up an interesting point. What change would it take to get the banners to update on its own, without the necessity of a manual refresh? Seems like a no brainer that it should update with the page load.

SUMMARY
What I gained from this experience? And most importantly, what can get WheaterCat users?
1) if you have a Mac with Retina Display 5k (but I think it's the same for 21.5 "4K) to prevent the WeatherCat images are twice as large as original, you must close WeatherCat, select the application file (WeatherCat) in its folder and click FILE INFORMATION, tick the check-box "displays in low resolution". Restarting WeatherCat images will be back in their original size
2) If the Mac is in sleep mode, the serial-USB driver SiliconLab stops working. Stop Monitor (of course) let WeatherCat running.
3) If Sylvester can't find the Twitter account information in System Preferences (OS X 10.11 El Capitan), open Terminal and type as is (you can copy/paste this line here) the command line
defaults write com.apple.accountsd ACOutputLevel 7 && killall -9 accounts
then type enter. Wait a few minutes and restart Sylvester. If it does not work, repeat the procedure several times without surrender ..... finally worked.
Thank you Stu and other friends of the Forum for the support that has resulted in short to solving these problems.
Regards to All.
Federico
P.S. This display rocks and I can't understand how I could do without a fusion drive so far.... [tup]
-
So glad you are up and running on your new monster machine.
I would still like to know if WeatherCat can be run without displaying in low resolution by creating a new preference file. Seems a shame to have a 5K iMac and have to run WeatherCat in low resolution. It's not like WC is a high-res graphic-intensive program.
I'm not asking you to do it, I'm just curious about WC on the new hardware.
I know it is a major inconvenience to rebuild the preference file. That's why I keep a clean copy of my functioning preference file. The last time I built one from scratch, I copied it somewhere else. That way, if it becomes corrupt, I have a clean copy that can be slipped into the right directory. It makes it so easy to restart without having to build one from scratch.

Dear Federico, Felix, Steve, Herb, Blick,
I never thought I would be using software to control the engine in a 50 year old car!
I would have expected to find carburetors in a car 50 years ..... and maybe you'd have less trouble if you have a good hear and good screwdriver.... :)
Well, the car is 50 years old (51 in May,) but the engine is only a few months old and generates around 500 horsepower! I was having a lot of trouble controlling the car and this fuel injection system really improved the control of the accelerator. Now I can get the car in the garage without being afraid I might accidentally slam into something!
P.S. I am ashamed publicly because WeatherCat hang because the Mac was in sleep mode...... >:(
Well this is a case where Apple is partly responsible. With all the emphasis on saving energy, Apple has adjusted the defaults and made it less obvious how to keep your computer running 24/7. A number of folks had problems with their computers going to sleep while running WeatherCat shortly after the launching of El Capitan.
Cheers, Edouard [cheers1]

the banner size both in my "save" folder and in the web site folder is 500x80
And the resolution is 72 to 96 dpi?
I'm still seeing exactly the same banner on every one of your posts. It's dated "3 apr 2016 20:28" Perhaps the setting at the forums needs to be deleted and renewed? At any rate, what is showing here doesn't seem to be updating. I think they should all be showing approximately the same date/time as your last post. Perhaps Stu can confirm that theory?

Xair:
Federico's banner is updating just fine in the forum. Banners are cached so I assume if you clear your cache or refresh your screen whilst you are looking at one of his posts, you will see his refreshed banner.
-
Busdriver, all you have to do is find that little arrow pointing to its tail in the right side of the URL frame and uh? and uh? uh, click it. I mean click the mouse with the pointer over the little arrow. ;) How that works when the page was just loaded, I don't know. I'm still new at this. Only started in 1984.
Free virtual beers to anyone who knows why it only refreshes the banner after clicking the reload page arrow is activated!
[cheers1]
-
I'm not interested in looking for more hidden arrows. All I know is that Stu's and Eduoard's and my banners were all showing the date/time corresponding to the posting time. I'm now on my iPad and see that the double-sized banner is now normal and current.
Safari once had a setting to adjust the cache size. I kept mine at zero exactly to avoid problems like this. When editing web pages, it is time consuming to have to keep emptying ones cache when a simple command+r should refresh the page. Perhaps I'll simply use the Disable cache menu.

Photoshop says both files in local WeatherCat and website folders are 500x80 pixels with a 72dpi resolution.
You can see it at http://www.meteoperugia.altervista.org/WeatherCatBanner.jpg (http://www.meteoperugia.altervista.org/WeatherCatBanner.jpg)
After ticking low-resolution checkbox now I can see(as with iMac as iPhone, iPad, PC etc) banner, dials, webcam, graphs and alle JPG files generated by WeatherCat as normal as when I used old iMac. Upgrading to 5k all that pictures was double size.
I will not insist, but it seems strange that you continue to see my banner 1000x160 because the JPG banner (here as elsewhere) is 800x80 and I see it now the same as all other users banner (including you). ;)
Let me know if something will change in next days because I'm curious about it... ;)

A number of folks had problems with their computers going to sleep while running WeatherCat shortly after the launching of El Capitan.
I wrote that since 2013 sleep mode in iMac is managed automatically by processor after "human inactivity" (no mouse, no keyboard...etc) to save energy.
Indeed in the System Preferences->Energy Saving I can't find the slider to set the time for start sleep mode but just slider to turn off the computer display after xx minutes (or never). After Stu tips I selected / unselected various commands in the panel (basically I asked that the HDD is never turned off) and now weatherCat no longer Hangs. The strange thing is that in the old iMac (early 2006 with Snow Leopard) the computer for over 10 years went to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity (there was a double slider to computers and displays) and weatherCat worked 24/7.
-
You are correct Federico. The slider options for energy saving went away in OS X in either Mavericks or Yosemite. I have to use a third-party app to keep my iMac running El Capitan from sleeping.

Same here ... I use a little free app in the Apple App Store called Caffeine.

No need to do anything else. Your banner looks great! I've simply disabled caches since there is no longer a setting for making an amount. [banghead]

Why third-party app? After Stu told me that WeatherCat was hanging because of sleep mode of Mac I've put a tick on first check-box in energy saving panel (Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off) and now I don't know if Mac goes sleeping but WeatherCat doesn't hang.... ;)
.......it seems that our two OS have different points of view on energy saving :)

Ha! That's bizarre that Federico and I took exactly the same screen shot and posted them at the same minute in time! :D
-
+1 Steve. Also, you may want to check the "Start up automatically after a power failure" incase the power blinks while you are away, the iMac will restart when power is restored and WXCat (in your login items) will boot again and you won't be out much of a gap on your website.

Hi Federico and WeatherCat automotive enthusiasts,
Well, the car is 50 years old (51 in May,) but the engine is only a few months old and generates around 500 horsepower!
[woohoo] You created a monster! :D
Would you believe that when I got started on this project I got some advice from a fellow on one of the classic Buick forums who went by the handle of "Dr. FrankenBuick" ?
Yup, I ended up with a whole lot more powerful engine then I thought I was getting! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/eek2.gif)
Cheers, Edouard [cheers1]

That setting on my iMac definitely does not prevent my iMac from sleeping. I called AppleCare and stumped them. So I downloaded a free app called Caffeine and it solved the problem of my iMac falling asleep.
-
Color me confused???
Me too. Must have been too little sleep or too much mountain air. I don't know why I posted that. Colour me discombobulated.
-
Strange: My Energy Saver panel is different than Steve posted. I'm missing Computer Sleep slider, he miss "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" and Power NAP check-box....but we run the same OS 10.11.4!
-
But, Federico. Yours has the UPS flag at the top. Perhaps Computer sleep is under that.
[cheers1]
-
But, Federico. Yours has the UPS flag at the top. Perhaps Computer sleep is under that.
[cheers1]
In the UPS panel (if I click on the flag) there is a second slider to with off display after xx minutes of black out. Nothing about computer sleeping.
And Steve panel is still missing NAP and "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off"....but got a second slider for computer sleeping delay. It's not important since WeatherCat is running without hangs but it's strange since we have the same OS release. ;)
-
I believe the difference is not in the OS, i.e. 10.11.4, but in the hardware that supports those features. Older models with older CPU's display difference behaviors within the same OS.
-
Agree with Pilot on the hardware configuration affecting System Preferences. But, 'no computer sleep' seems unfathomable. In other words, I don't get that either.
[cheers1]
