I have been given a raspberry pi which I have loaded with Ubuntu (Linux). Is there any easy install weather station software that I can get to play with?
Secondly, I have an old laptop 2.13ghz dual core on an Intel chip with no operating system installed (yet). Rather than install Windows, what are my options and what can I run on it from a Davis vantage vue perspective ?
Any help gratefully appreciated. I have no intentions to disconnect from my Mac and Weathercat, but love a challenge !

I also have a Pi lying around. But its not in use. Not sure what to do with it, really.
I was fiddeling with WeeWx as weather station software for a period. I got it working somewhat, but only for a few minutes at a time. After that my console locked up. I believe that was due to I have the older mk1 version of the Vantage pro. I tried to hook it up with a rs232 to ethernet adapter. Well, I gave up, but people have got it working with other versions of weather stations.

Oh, and older laptops usually run fine with some flavour of Linux as well. [tup]

Thanks for your reply. Tried weewx but just couldn't get it to load at all on the raspberry pi. Might have been me though. Have loaded Ubuntu 14.4 on the laptop which is running really well, open office and gimp etc give it new life. Any ideas for a weather station program?

I looked around for Linux-weather software about a year ago. The non-commersial alternatives I could find was Weewx (http://"http://weewx.com") and Wview (http://"http://wviewweather.com").
The latter one seems like a rather dead project though, with its last update from May 2014.
One should not forget Joe Jaworskis vproweather (http://"http://www.joejaworski.com/weather/"). A simple text-based program. Fun to doodle with if you like the Linux terminal. I rewrote the source code to get metric values and used that many years ago (like back in 2005...). That was for the older version for the VantagePro mk1. Not sure if vproweather plays well with your V.Vue.

A bit late, but nonetheless:
I use a RaspBi to control two of my webcams (Pr?graten Ost (http://wetter.unterwurzacher.at/webcam_ost.jpg) and Johannish?tte (http://www.johannis-huette.at/webcam/webcam.jpg)). The main webcam Pr?graten West (http://wetter.unterwurzacher.at/webcam.jpg) is controlled by my dedicated WeatherCat Mac mini via Terminal.
Cheers,
Reinhard
