Title: Frost advisory
Post by: LesCimes on August 22, 2015, 02:22:38 PM
I notice that a wide area in the Canadian Rockies, surrounding Calgary, Edmonton, etc. has a frost advisory.  I think it is the first of the season to reach down to lower elevations. Being a resident of southeast USA, think hot and humid, such northerly forecasts portend milder temperatures for our region, eventually.  [freeze]

Dear Michael and WeatherCat watchers of the changing seasons,

I notice that a wide area in the Canadian Rockies, surrounding Calgary, Edmonton, etc. has a frost advisory.  I think it is the first of the season to reach down to lower elevations. Being a resident of southeast USA, think hot and humid, such northerly forecasts portend milder temperatures for our region, eventually.  [freeze]

We are having a relatively cool "autumn like" period in Northern California after a several brief but intense heatwaves.  August can be cooler than one would expect seasonally.  It seems to be a pattern that has been consistent over the past few years.

There was even forecast model guidance that rain would have come very close to the San Francisco bay area next week.  Alas, the models have now shifted to a different solution that keeps us dry.  However, there is hope . . . of a sort.  My trusty wagon is now just about certain to be in the Orinda Classic car show once more.  The last time she was in the show in 2013 - it rained! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/rain_happy.gif)  The show has been moved up a week in September, perhaps to try to reduce the risk of bad weather.  We'll see if mother nature is still able to "hit the target!"

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

32? last week at Sargents, Colorado over the "hill" from me; we had a low of 39? the same time.  I bones are telling me there is going to be an early freeze  [freeze]
Title: That was *SO* yesterday!! (Re: Frost advisory )

Dear HantaYo and WeatherCat watchers of the seasons, . . .

Well now, . . . . expecting an early autumn is now SO yesterday!

Our local National Weather Service office had been holding fairly steady that we weren't going to get any more monsoonal moisture into September.  All of a sudden, this morning the forecast models "changed their mind" and we are expecting a surge of monsoonal clouds at least on Tuesday and Wednesday.  More ominously, the forecast discussion mentioned that the forecast models are having "a hard time" with all the cyclonic activity that has popped up in the Pacific.  In 2009, just a few days after I put up my Davis station, we got hammered by 4 inches of rain one day which came from the remnants of a typhoon.

We may still be in for a wild transition from summer to autumn!  [thunder]

Cheers, Edouard

No complaints around here about the weather! Absolutely great!!!

We're heading to Seattle 9/1. Amtrak to Vancouver. Rocky Mountaineer across the western Canadian Rockies to Banff. Then a bus tour from there to Jasper via Lake Louise. VIA Rail back to Vancouver. Amtrak back to Seattle by the 10th. Won't mine seeing some snow, but I'd rather it be on the peaks! [lol]

Dear X-Air and WeatherCat vacationers, . . .

Wow!  Sounds like a great trip!  [bounce]

As already reported, I'm also a sucker for trains, so it sounds like a lot of fun.  There is only one thing that would make even better . . . if it was a stream train!!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

This is the first time we've ever taken a "professionally-planned" trip. We always did the planning on our own, we're more the B&B-and-rent-a-car type of travelers (except, in Europe, where they know how to run passenger railroads!). However, Rick Steves just didn't write much about "Canadian Rockies Through the Back Door (https://store.ricksteves.com/shop/p/europe-through-the-back-door)"! [lol] BTW, if you ever want to visit Alaska, take the Alaska Ferry, at least to Juneau! Their ships are much smaller than the cruise ships and they get into place along the Inland waterways that the cruises can only dream about. Plus, they have National Forrest rangers giving free talks! You can then fly out of Juneau to other areas of the state. Of course, there is the Alaska Railroad from Seward all the way to Fairbanks... We'll be there somewhat after you. My daughter will be attending Seattle Pacific University, and we will be leaving on our cross-country trip September 18 (my 62nd birthday) and arriving on September 23 for move-in day (and my wife's 60th birthday.) After a couple of days orientation, we will be empty nesters with no plans to head home any time soon. (The cat died a couple weeks ago, and our other daughter got married on Saturday.)

Our plans are to take anywhere from two weeks to two months wandering our way home, without any real plans at all. Just go wherever sounds interesting.

I can't wait!  [bounce]

I just hope you leave plenty of water for the goat that will be keeping the grass 'cut'!! [tup] with that minor problem solved, sounds like a great 'plan'! Enjoy!!!

My sisters did this trip a couple of years ago and loved every minute. Enjoy.

Good times Steve. Enjoy. Not that I think your cat dying is a good time, but it did happen at a convenient time for some sightseeing.

Wow, I've been dreaming of taking this same trip with my wife. Be sure to post a picture or two when you can. Looking forward to hearing about it! Have fun and leave the door open so some of that cold air comes to the southeast.

Nice summary of the WU temperature forecast for the US over the next couple of weeks. Depending on where you live, you'll either like it or not. It bodes well for those of us in the western part of the country.

Dear Blick, X-Air, Michael, and WeatherCat climate watchers,

Nice summary of the WU temperature forecast for the US over the next couple of weeks. Depending on where you live, you'll either like it or not. It bodes well for those of us in the western part of the country.

Actually Weather Underground is getting these forecasts from the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center:

http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/ (http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/)

It is the same source from where I get the monthly and 3-month forecasts I'm posting on threads like this:

http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=1712.0 (http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=1712.0)

I see that the Climate Prediction Center is now forecasting cooler than normal temperatures all the way up to September 12th which is the day of the Orinda Classic Car show.  However, they haven't yet picked up the increasing chances of rain that I'm expecting for the show . . . .yet! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/rain_happy.gif)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Have a little faith Edouard. If you wash and wax that Buick and put it outside, it should definitely rain.
That has worked for the 50 years since that car was born and it should work next month at the car show too.   [rain2]

Dear Blick and WeatherCat "rain makers, . . . "

True, but it is a good idea to cruise over to the Climate Prediction Center every now and then to see what they think might be coming your way.

Well, that sounds simple enough, but moving a car around that doesn't have an engine it is a real challenge.  As such waxing such a car is more tricky than it normally should be!  It doesn't help that I'm on my own.  When I as a kid and my Dad was alive, two strong backs and weak minds were more than sufficient to push even a 3800 lbs. car.  Nowadays the only other members of the household have serious mobility problems and can't easily reach the garage - never mind push a car.  So the only "man-power" in the house is me.

Cheers, Edouard
Title: More signs of autumn weather pattern. (Re: Frost advisory )
Post by: elagache on September 04, 2015, 09:35:21 PM
Dear Michael and WeatherCat watchers of the seasons,

The Monterey office of the National Weather Service is reporting that Northern California is making the usual transition from summer to autumn.  Unfortunately for us, this doesn't mean cooler temperatures - precisely the opposite. Before storms actually reach us, they pass to the north and in their passing, the 4 corners high pressure ridge expands and contracts.  When the high pressure is over us, the winds shift from onshore to offshore.  That is mechanism of the famous "Santa Ana winds," and there is an analogous effect further north.  The forecast is for warmer weather all next week and perhaps into the following week.  If that holds up, my trusty wagon will fail to bring rain next Saturday for the car show.

Nonetheless, this pattern is a sure sign of the change of the seasons.  So you'all should be also seeing evidence of the northern hemisphere moving out of summer and into fall.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Dear HantaYo and WeatherCat drought sufferers,

A dusting of snow  [cold1] on the high mountain peaks in Colorado this morning.  Snow anytime!  Tis the season for new snow tires.

Alas the only advisories we've got around here are for excessive heat.   [sweat2]  It is normal for the season, but it does feel like they are getting worse.  It is global warming or simply that I'm getting old!  :o

We're in Jasper, CA, right now waiting on a VIA train to take us back to Vancouver. Fortunately, it is now only 10.5 hours late (it had been 12...). There is some snow on many of the mountain tops, there was a light snow storm about three days ago, but everyone says it's way early for real accumulations.

I fear I lost a reply in another thread due to accepting aphone call. The main message was that I'm having trouble with the Canadian Customs officials in the matter of sending moisture down Edouard's way! Our bags are full, so that wouldn't be of much help..

Well I sure wish you had better luck with those custom officials!  We are having the worst heat wave of the summer and the forecast is for continued heat.  [sweat2]  Even my trusty wagon isn't having any luck bringing the rains.  It is definitely a rough year here in California.
