Title: Sample Data for the Trial period?
Post by: xairbusdriver on March 02, 2015, 11:49:28 PM
Perhaps I'm just picky. No, I definitely AM picky! ::) This request may be very difficult to fulfill and probably of very limited use, mainly only during the trial period of the WeatherCat app. It is probably almost impossible to 'convince' the app that there is actually hardware connected when there is not.

I'm just wondering if it is possible to include a small dataset that a trial user could use to sample the many graphs and display options, before actually connecting everything/any thing. Hopefully, this would enable new users and even those who don't yet have a weather station to get up to speed on the app. It should also help sell the app! 8)

I'm part of that "no hardware" group! I did run through the Preferences, and took a look at the many Menus. And I was pleased to see that the app didn't crash or lock up just because it didn't have any hardware to find! [tup]

But now your trial will run out before you decide what hardware to purchase. ;)

I'm taking your comment to be spoken with a bit of 'tongue in mouth'? The 'trial' was not to determine whether or not to buy the software! [tup] That is a given, based on what I've read here! :)
Title: WeatherCat requires a station (Re: Sample Data for the Trial period?)

Dear xairbusdriver, Steve, and WeatherCat fans,

Perhaps I'm just picky. No, I definitely AM picky! ::) This request may be very difficult to fulfill and probably of very limited use, mainly only during the trial period of the WeatherCat app. It is probably almost impossible to 'convince' the app that there is actually hardware connected when there is not.

Actually you can't play with WeatherCat at all without a Weather station to connect to.  If it doesn't find a station it simply stops.

Many years ago, before WeatherCat was even a cat  [cat], it had a feature to allow you to monitor two additional Internet based sources of weather data, typically Weather Underground stations.  I kind of liked that capability because it meant I could have graphs of weather data from nearby locations displayed right next to my own data.  Since the San Francisco Bay Area is notorious for having micro-climates, this was potentially interesting.

Apparently, few other people found the feature interesting.  When our fearless leader Stu (Stuart Ball, developer of WeatherCat) put da' cat in WeatherCat  [WCSmall], he dropped the support for the additional stations.  He is probably correct in that call.  If you are curious about nearby stations, you can use the Weather Underground website or apps to get all the information you could possibility ever want.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

P.S.  ;) . . . so why don't you just cut to the chase and buy yourself a station! . .  [bounce]  You wouldn't be afraid of anybody like . . . . . SWMBO!! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/chased_by_spider.jpg)

There is a Vantage simulator in the SDK which 'pretends' to be a real Vantage - but it's really only useful to people writing plug-ins as  the data is totally unrealistic. Without being connected to the hardware it'll not be able to do much unfortunately.

No problem! Thanks for the answer, anyway. [cheer]

OTOH, as my programmer son says when someone asks if he can code something, "Sure! Programming is really only typing!" [banghead]
