Title: Davis Data Logger Sample Interval
Post by: Blicj11 on November 14, 2014, 03:10:22 PM
For those of you using a Davis Data Logger, I am interested in finding out at what time interval your sampling is set. This setting is made in WeatherCat | Tools | Station Hardware Options. You can see a very helpful chart on the data logger capacity in the Wiki at http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/Capacity_of_the_Davis_data-logger_to_store_weather_data_depending_on_the_chosen_sampling_interval. If you care to share your thinking in selecting your sampling interval, please leave a comment.

Thank you.

Every minute.  :) I do really not know why, but I haven't had any problems with this setting since the Console is running. I think a fallback for nearly two days is enough. Another benefit from this setting is very exact data.

Cheers,
Reinhard

I set mine at five minutes when back on LWC and have never changed it. It must have been on the recommendation of the folks on the MacWeather forum, but I can't really recall.

Mine is set at 30 minutes, but I don't really know why. Maybe that was the default and I just never changed it.
Title: 5 minutes + adaptive sampling. (Re: Davis Data Logger Sample Interval)

Dear WeatherCat station caregivers,

I also have my station set at 5 minutes.  However, I also have WeatherCat's Adaptive sampling feature turned on.  So when "interesting" things happen (as Stu has defined in the algorithm) WeatherCat takes more frequent samples.  Since I run WeatherCat 24/7 I think that is a reasonable compromise.  After all, the data over the summer is . . . . really, really boring around here!

Dear Edouard,

didn't you mix up two different things? Blick asked for the settings of the data logger that can be set in Tools > Station Hardware Options. Am I right that you are talking about WeatherCat's sampling rate that is set in Peferences > Misc2? This one (sampling rate) I have the same settings as you - 5 minutes with adaptive on.  :)

Cheers,
Reinhard

Hi Reinhard, WC fans,

An interesting point: does it really matter what the datalogger is set to when the WC sampling rate is higher (interval shorter)? Assuming both are running 24x7x365 of course.

I've got the Data logger interval set at 15 min. Although I have set up remote access now, the reason for this was that I wanted to avoid data getting lost while being away for a few weeks.
WeatherCat sampling rate is set to 5 mins, with adaptive sampling enabled.

Hi Jos,
if both are running 24/7/365(366) without failure then I think the setting of the data logger does not matter anyhow. But if WeatherCat is unable to receive data from the Console for what reason ever then it is important to what you have set the logging interval of the data logger. The shorter the interval, the shorter time you have before the logger runs over. Look at the Link Blicj11 has posted: Table of Capacity (http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/Capacity_of_the_Davis_data-logger_to_store_weather_data_depending_on_the_chosen_sampling_interval).

Title: Data logger as backup. (Re: Davis Data Logger Sample Interval)

Hi Reinhard and WeatherCat schemers, . . . .  ;)

Well not exactly, but I didn't explain the idea behind the choice.  Yes, the rationale is to use the data logger as a backup.   At 5 minutes the data logger stores almost 9 days of data.  As long as I'm never away from the house for extended periods, odds are I won't need more than 9 days of backup.  So by having the data logger at the same interval as WeatherCat's own sampling that means my data will remain mostly consistent even when there is a problem.  Should I have a failure during a major storm event, I'll lose some data that WeatherCat would have collected. Nonetheless, if I'm in that predicament, I'll probably lots of more important things to worry about! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/nervous_smiley.gif)
