Title: WeatherCat on your Desktop
Post by: wurzelmac on November 11, 2014, 02:04:40 PM
I am interested in how you let WeatherCat show its features on your desktop! Display only graphs, only gauges (like me) or mix them up. Is your desktop cluttered or tidy?  ;D

So here is mine:

I'm a creature of habit. I haven't changed my WeatherCat desktop in probably two years. During winter, I ad the fourth camera that's zoomed in on my snow gauge. (yes, I know I need a new arbor for the garden...)

Great question, Reinhard. I have a second monitor on which I display WeatherCat. I have a bunch of the new custom gauges that I was running, but when my plist file blew up I went back to the basics and just haven't gotten around to fancying it again, although I will, as I love the new guages.

Hi Reinhard, Steve, Blick, and WeatherCat cyber packrats . . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/packrat-emoticon.png)

I am interested in how you let WeatherCat show its features on your desktop! Display only graphs, only gauges (like me) or mix them up. Is your desktop cluttered or tidy?  ;D

Alas, I've never recovered from trying to display as much information as possible to test out the WeatherCat 2 betas.  I used to try to display some things on a second display space, but I gave up before Herb educated me about Mission Control.  So this is what it looks like right now - how cluttered can you get!! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/eek-sign.gif)

I really need a strategy that changes the display between wet and dry seasons.  During the summer, WeatherCat is being monitored mostly to help control inside temperature.  In the winter there is usually one thing in my mind . . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/rain_happy.gif)

I really need a strategy that changes the display between wet and dry seasons.

While in WeatherCat, go to the Window menu -> Save Graph Position -> Set 1, Set 2, etc.

Then each season go to Window -> Restore Graph Position, -> Set 1, Set 2, etc.

Easy peasy!

Hi Rheinhard
I'm running 24 gauges since we were beta testing during the development testing
for some odd reason the Blancy-Criddle gauge didn't post

Howdy Steve and WeatherCat experts, . . . . .

I really need a strategy that changes the display between wet and dry seasons.

Then each season go to Window -> Restore Graph Position, -> Set 1, Set 2, etc.

 ;D . . . . . Yeah, that's a good system alright.  Just one small problem. . . . . . .  (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/thinking_idea.gif)

Until I decide exactly what I want to display (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/juggle.gif) , then there isn't any graph positions to save yet!! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/D'oh.gif)

Hello wurzelmac! Interesting thread you've started here.

My own preference is to use 2 monitors, the iMac's built in 27" and a 27" Thunderbolt Display. On the built-in, I use 2 spaces, one for WC and one for all other tasks. If I'm not working or playing on this computer, I show the gauges on the built-in, and, using 4 Spaces on the Thunderbolt, show graphs for 1 Day, 7 Day, 28 Day and 1 Year with each iteration on a separate page or Space.  Normally showing on the Thunderbolt is the daily graphs. There is a 14 day graph right now which shows the garage temperature. That temperature changes slowly, so it needs less screen width than 14 days would imply.  Under it is the  satellite image window. Here are the screenshots.

Herb,

you inspired me to use Spaces on my WeatherCat dedicated Mac mini - I wonder why I overlooked this very cool feature in the past! With just a switch to another desktop I now have:
#1 gauges and today window:
as posted before
#2 customgraphs last 24 hrs and customgraphs 3 days:
#3 customgraphs last 7 days
(http://wetter.unterwurzacher.at/bilder/3.png)
#4 customgraphs whole year

Thanks again for inspiring me!

Cheers,
Reinhard
Title: Windows don't return to Spaces on reboot. (Re: WeatherCat on your Desktop)
Post by: elagache on November 16, 2014, 09:25:22 PM
Hi Reinhard, Herb, and WeatherCat explorers of . . . . . Spaces . . . . (pun intended of course!)  [biggrin]

you inspired me to use Spaces on my WeatherCat dedicated Mac mini - I wonder why I overlooked this very cool feature in the past!

It is a very neat feature, but alas Apple has gotten sloppy with Spaces like so many things these days.  So instead of providing a complete API so that Stu could remember which space you left a WeatherCat window, there is no such facility.  As a result, when you restart WeatherCat all your windows will end up in a single space.

As Herb "luurned" me, You can use Mission Control to move the windows from one space to another and the windows will pop into the previously located location in the new space.  However, you'll have to move each window "by hand."

As a result, I've never gotten systematic about moving some of my WeatherCat clutter into another space.  I already have 5 separate windows associated with Path Finder each of whom serves as a workspace for the activities associated with each space on my Mac.  So every reboot or even restart of Path Finder I have to move these windows over.  To divvy up the WeatherCat windows would just add to the restart burden.

Oh well, someday.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

If you want all of your WeatherCat windows in a single specific Space, simply right-click on the WeatherCat icon in the dock, select Options, and then the specific Space. Now, if you have some windows on one Space, and others on another Space, this of course won't work.

I use DelayedLauncher to open the dozen or so applications I have running all the time, and they all open in their appropriate Space.

I'll second what Steve said. To keep from mixing up your WC windows and gauges with the other windows associated with other applications, simply assign WC to a specific space. Then after you locate all of WC's windows in different spaces all organized and purdy, restart the computer (or wait until the next incident that requires restarting). All of the WC windows will default to the assigned space for WC on restart. Type Control-(up arrow), and selectively drag the WC gauges and charts to their respectively chosen Spaces thumbnails. Only drag the ones that belong elsewhere. If you have an easily recognizable organizational framework, such as all gauges on one Spaces page and all 1 day charts on another, then recovery from a restart will go rather quickly.

Best wishes!

Hello Herb,
done as you and Steve mentioned me to do. Assigned WC a space (Desktop 1) and after upgrading to 10.10.1 I had to restart the Mac. All WC windows are shown in the assigned space, and it was quite easy to drag the graphs to their belonging space that I used to see them before. The miracle is that the graphs know their place in the space - just drag them to the space and let them "fly".  [bounce] Really cool and easy!
Cheers,
Reinhard

It's time to wake Reinhard's thread up! Everyone should have gotten adjusted to WC 2 by now. How do you display WeatherCat on your desktop now?

I moved WC into my older, 2008, 24" iMac. It doesn't have a Thunderbolt port, so the second monitor is not used. However, with much less borrowing of time on this computer now, since the 2011 model is much faster, WC windows are no longer in the way of doing other things, and Spaces still keeps charts segregated by range. So, in the interest of efficiency of Stu's hard disk space, here is how I've rearranged my gauges. Everything else is pretty much the same.

I usually have my desktop covered with numerous windows from multiple apps. Not much room for many gauges, pretty as they are. When the Desktop image is visible, it's one of my own images, usually not suitable for a background for nice round gauges! So I just use Stu's client window running. If it gets covered up, I can always do a command-tab to get it back in view. :)

WC is actually running on a headless mini, so I don't even have those nice gauges on its invisible desktop! [blush]

So I can create another website and monitor my backyard weather no matter where I am in the world! I used to travel a lot in my job, so I always wanted to know if my backyard was still there and if the grass was growing. Now I don't travel so much, but gathering that same info would require walking to the back of the house. Doing that could mean I miss a good cat video! [banghead] [woohoo]

Sharing it with the neighborhood and WU, PWS, etc. is purely secondary. :P

Just poking a little fun? Only reason I'd see it that way is 'cause I don't do a website. I started out trying to, and I got flummoxed by FTP. That made me decide that I'm better off spending my time on things I understand. So, I bought a cement mixer and built some steps. ? Well, one step, ? and a walkway. A short one. But, the step was over a concrete bridge that the water runs through when it rains.

Happy New Year!

That would be S000ooo limiting for me! So I'm extremely busy trying to do even a quarter of the things I don't understand! I still buy "instructional" books on Calculus! Failed a 5 hour class in my freshman year! [blush] OTOH, it helped me prove to my Dad that I really didn't have a career as an Engineer! Until FedEx bought their first 727's, anyway. Then I actually became an "engineer", said so right on my license!! And I've always been interested in railroads... [biggrin]

So, Happy Last Thursday of the Year!!! [cheer]

Steve, do you ever have trouble displaying the Floating Graphic? I have tried to use it for a couple of years now, on and off, but it is kind of quirky on my desktop. Disappears occasionally and I have to go into Preferences, unselect it, reboot WeatherCat, then reselect it. Too much effort.

Thanks for the instructional, Xair! ? I did not know that. Now I can prank my brother's new iMac and sit back and snicker.

I guess that could come in handy for a point of sale system with the duck feet (err. foot) of the iMac nailed (err. bolted) to a wall.

Somehow, that's what every one thinks when they see this capability. I'm sure that the sense of humor at Apple had nothing to do with this, of course. I think it just fixes the problem when Apple went from horizontal boxes ( II, IIx, IIci, some Quadra models, etc) to the vertical boxes (Power Mac G3, other Quadra models, etc), I mean, the poor cpu never knew which way was "up"! How do you display the custom gauges like that, without the "window" around them?
I have only found the way to open them is through the menu tools - custom gauges - some gauge and then click on the little arrow at the top to hide the settings, but that leaves the three mac-window-dots and the window frame visible.

Im curious. ???
