Title: Snow totals and way to adjust monthly averages
Post by: monymony on October 01, 2014, 12:53:42 PM
I like the fact that the snow totals are now showing on the year-to-year summary.  What would be nice is a way to filter the years used to calculate the monthly and yearly averages.  In my case my station records start is 2007 but only in 2013 did I actively start tracking snow totals.  This is causing my averages to skew.

Additionally it would be nice to have a separate snow and rain season (i.e. set rain season Jan thru Dec and snow season July thru June).

Overall a minor request and very glad to see the ability to track snow now included with WeatherCat v2.

Understand the issue with regards to first snow date and 0's - let me have a think about it.

Snow season added to the feature requests.

Thanks for the suggestions  [tup]

One additional request for snow entries.... the ability to enter "trace" amounts.   [snowflake] [snowflake] [snowflake]

Can you expand on trace amounts please? The smallest amount it will register is 100th of a unit (inches or mm's)

Hi Stu,

I take measurements for the CoCoRaHS program (www.cocorahs.org) and typically a "trace" amount of snow is recorded if the amount is too small to be measured or < 0.1".  An example I would have submitted can be found by going to (http://cocorahs.org/ViewData/ViewDailyPrecipReport.aspx?DailyPrecipReportID=c30bdb3c-f169-4751-b0a7-a5139249a819).  While recording that some small amount of snow did fall on a particular day, this amount is not counted against the monthly/yearly total.  This is why entering in 0.01 for snow would skew the totals.

I do realize this type of logic does go outside of the data capture method supplied by WC.  This request would be a "nice to have".

Thanks for the info Jay - the only thing I can think of at the moment is a 'trace' tick-box - if enabled, values below 0.1" (or 2mm) wouldn't count when calculating totals? Alternatively a trace button on the entry sheet, which just records a trace - again, these entries wouldn't be counted?

Hi Stu,

That approach would make sense but certainly it is a low priority.  Not sure what any others that record snow totals think.  The snow functions work very nicely with the saratoga templates used by my website.  Thanks again for adding this feature!
