Title: Newbie with FTP uploading problems
Post by: ha-rob on December 18, 2013, 09:59:56 PM
Hi,

I am new to Weather Cat. Have been to Weather Display for many years on PC. Have recently bought a iMac OS X 10.9. I have had big trouble with changing Weather Display over to Mac from PC. Have the two last days been trying out Weather Cat. Seems to me that WC is much easier to deal with than WD. Got WC running few seconds after installation (the trial version). My weather station is a La Crosse WS-2350.

But I need some help to sort out one problem. Have been trying to create a simple web page. In the WC Preferences menu I have ticked for "Enable FTP upload", typed in FTP user name, password and directory. Then pushing the "test"-button. Have tried this several times and I always get the message: "FTP ERROR (7) - Couldn`t connect to host. Server down?". I use the FTP program Fetch and I am sure it is connected before pushing the "test"-button. I have ticked for Preventing App Nap in WC, WCC and Fetch but it won`t work anyway. Uploading the files manual works. My web page is on www.uranusweather.com.

Would appreciate some good tips to get the automatic FTP upload working.

Rob

Hi Rob,
Welcome to the forum.

The error you're getting indicates that it wasn't able to connect to your FTP server - this might be because of too many connections currently (make sure no other client is connected) or there's a problem with the 'URL to directory' field. Normally this field is of the format:
ftp://mydomain.com/path/to/upload/folder
(note no www).

Very often, the path to the upload folder is different to that as viewed in a browser.

However, if your web hosting provider is using CPanel to configure things then it's typically just:
ftp://mydomain.com
and the upload directory is set automatically from the ftp user name (which is typically the email address of the user).

Hi Rob, and welcome aboard!

Stu, my hosting provider uses CPanel, but the only path I could get to work included the public_html folder like this (where avon-weather.com is a sub-domain under my personal domain)

"ftp://ftp.morrisgarage.com/public_html/avon-weather.com/"

Welcome Rob:

The ftp path that works for me is just as Stu described and I use my email address as the username:

ftp://ftp.mydomain.com/

In my case I have my upload folder mapped to the root of my domain so I don't need to specify the subfolder.

Yep, I guess it may depend on either configuration or version of CPanel - the docs for your web-host should give some info.

Thank you very much for good help everyone. The ftp-path that I first typed in was: ftp://mydomain.com. When changing to ftp://ftp.mydomain.com everything worked well. [cheers1]

This is what I use on Ultra, http://ultrawebsitehosting.com/

ftp://pbeaudet.us/public_html/

This has worked since I first started. I have no idea what a CPanel is.

Dear Rob, Stu, Steve, Blick and WeatherCat fans,

First, let me also welcome you Rob to the WeatherCat forum! (http://www.canebas.org/Weather/LWC_forum/Custom_emoticons/welcome_smiley.gif)

Second, I've been puzzling over folks having problems with using WeatherCat to upload via FTP and especially those having trouble when switching from Weather Display.  This thread has been quite revealing!

I've added all the interesting tidbits mentioned on this thread to a new WeatherCat Wiki entry:

http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_FTP_connection_problems (http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_FTP_connection_problems)

I also started up a new thread on the forum looking for WeatherCat FTP "horror stories."

http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=1097.0 (http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=1097.0)

So if anybody can think of some other way FTP can trip up users - PLEASE send them way and I'll add them to that Wiki entry.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Dear Blick, Stu, and WeatherCat infomaniacs . . . .

Nice addition to the Wiki Edouard. I sent you a PM with a couple of very minor tweaks.

Thanks Blick!  I went through and cleaned up the text a bit.  I wrote a little fast and it was a bit rough along a few edges.

Good idea Edouard  [tup]

Well, if we don't write these things down, we'll be condemned to have to figure it all out again someday!! (http://www.canebas.org/Weather/LWC_forum/Custom_emoticons/D%27oh.gif)

That's why we have the wiki  :)

Just as a note folks, anyone can hack on the wiki - all you need to do is register an account with the wiki software.
