I have to admit that I had not tested this particular possible remark in my limited
METAR translations on my site. I was pleased that the code worked, of course. But I was surprised to see it from Newark, which is one of the most visited airports in my career. Granted, there are 'hills' to the west, but none that I would call "a topographic barrier" (as described as the common cause of this cloud type by the
NWS).
I would expect these to be quite common from the left coast to just past the Rockies. Also along the Smokies or even the Boston 'Mountains'. Any of you mid-westerner's see thes very often?
