Title: Relocating and need to start fresh
Post by: kmatley on July 28, 2019, 11:06:48 PM
This is a stupid question because I've done this many times in the past, but I'm a lot older now, and can't seem to remember how to do it.
I've relocated to another state and am setting up my weather station at my new home. I need to move the records for my old station away from WeatherCat and start fresh with a new location, station name, and data. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Are you wanting help archiving your old data or just deleting it?

And are you moving to a new computer in the new location or just trying to figure out how to delete all references to your old WeatherCat location on the existing computer?

BTW, Edouard wrote a Wiki on moving to a new computer which has a great list of where to find about every generated WeatherCat file of interest.

Dear kmatley, Felix, and WeatherCat "born under a wandering star" types,

This is a stupid question because I've done this many times in the past, but I'm a lot older now, and can't seem to remember how to do it.

I do hope you haven't had to move too often!

I've relocated to another state and am setting up my weather station at my new home. I need to move the records for my old station away from WeatherCat and start fresh with a new location, station name, and data. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Felix has given you pointers in the right direction.  However, there is a potential wrinkle.

It depends on whether or not you would ever want to browse data from your old house with WeatherCat.  The best way to do that is either to create a dedicated "archive account" or perhaps an old computer.  If you won't ever look at that old data, all you need to do is delete your present installation.  There are instructions on "uninstalling WeatherCat" in manual which is Appendix-6 (page 214 in the current manual.)  In order to restart WeatherCat, obviously skip the step of deleting it.

Let us know if this resolves your problem or if you need more instructions.

Cheers, Edouard

Thank you, Edouard. That's exactly the refresher I needed.

Bringing this back from the dead...

I'd moved last year and now that I have enough time, I'd like to remove old data. I found the wiki but it doesn't really address deleting data from the database. And, I only found a wiki which discusses moving data from one computer to another. I can't find anything on archiving, or deleting, data prior to a specific time and date. If someone provides information on how to delete and/or archive, I should be able to handle it from there.

Thanks in advance
Title: WeatherCat has not archive feature (Re: Relocating and need to start fresh)

Dear zazzy and WeatherCat "movin' on" types,

. . . .
I can't find anything on archiving, or deleting, data prior to a specific time and date. If someone provides information on how to delete and/or archive, I should be able to handle it from there.

WeatherCat has no archive feature.  You could remove data so that you couldn't access it anymore, but that would effectively be permanent.  Is that what you are looking to do?

Cheers, Edouard

Assuming you don't want/need to access your 'old' data, the process is fairly simple. You basically clear a few folders and start up WC like it was a completely new install. I do hope you have stored your WC Registration Code in your Very Important Data app! (look at the "Register WeatherCat..." under the "WeatherCat" menu. [tup] )

The Path to your data is: YourUserName/Library/WeatherCatData/
If you don't have your home Library showing, use the "Go" menu, select "Go to Folder..." and type "Library" in the text box. (This should open your home library in a new Finder window, you can then drag that into the sidebar of any other open Finder window. Your home Library will then always be available in a Finder window sidebar.  ThU32:-))

I would suggest you simply archive/compress your "WeatherCatData" directory/folder. Actually, the data you are already collected is in the "LocationX" folder. In my case "X" is "1", if you may have more than one just let us know.

After archiving/compressing the "Location..." data, you can simply move it to another location or rename it and leave it where it is.

Before deleting anything, consider that there are over 15 preference files that you will probably need to edit. Things like the name, Lat/Long, altitude of your new location for example. So, I would suggest that you NOT delete any of the ".plist" files. WC should be able to continue using the current pref files.

Once you have archived/compressed/moved/renamed/backed up your 'old' data, you should be able to restart WC and it will rebuild a new "Location..." folder and all its new files and folders. You can then edit the few prefs that will need updating and start collecting weather data for your new location!

Thank you for the replies.

How do I delete data prior to a specific date? Like I stated above, I moved last year. I don't want to lose the data from the past year, just data prior to a specific date. I know the date and time.

Inside the "Location" folder are folders titled by the year. Inside each "Year" folder are pairs of files for each month: "4_WeatherCatData.cat" and "4_WeatherCatData.cat.hrs". The number is the month of the year, 1 through 12. The latest file will be the last month you collected data last year.

You can use the Tools->Data ViewerEditor menu to look at what is in those ".cat.hrs" files. Page 178 of The Manual has more info on these files.

Again, there is no need to actually delete any of these files. Simply hiding them (archived or compressed and renamed or moved) should allow WC to connect to your Davis Station and start creating new data files automatically.
