Dear Greg and WeatherCat station caregivers,
I know there is the Wiki article for switching WeatherCat from one computer to another but I can't find anything on what would be involved in changing your weather station hardware. Could you go from a Vue to a Pro and still retain your historical data? I'm not in any rush to do this but wondering if I have that option when something fails (got to thinking about it because my Vue power adapter suddenly died this week).
To cover all the bases, you could simply purchase a replacement power adapter and get your Vantage Vue working again. This could be an interesting idea even if you decide to upgrade to Vantage Pro-2, because the Vantage Vue console can read the data from Vantage Pro-2 instrument cluster. So you could get two consoles as part of the upgrade.
To answer your main question -
absolutely! The weather data that has been downloaded by WeatherCat is stored on your hard drive. So long as WeatherCat is running, the data is already safe on your Mac. The only issue would be any data lost during the station transition.
Since clearly you are considering an upgrade, you might want to spend some time considering how you might want to do this and where would you purchase your new station. You might not be aware that Davis stations are heavily discounted at various dealers. We'll be glad to share with you our favorites. The other issue is that a Vantage Pro-2 separates the anemometer from the other instruments. It is worth thinking about how you want to set up your instruments to get the best data. Once more we'll be glad to help!
Cheers, Edouard
