Title: Higher resolution model for Atmospheric Rivers
Post by: elagache on March 08, 2018, 11:20:11 PM
Dear WeatherCat climate watchers,

Atmospheric Rivers are becoming more popular - both among academics and in terms of bringing intense rainfall.  A pair of papers have been recently published that describe a higher resolution computer model for keeping track of Atmospheric Rivers.  Here is the announcement for the papers:

https://www2.ucar.edu/atmosnews/just-published/122861/atmospheric-rivers-come-focus-high-res-climate-model (https://www2.ucar.edu/atmosnews/just-published/122861/atmospheric-rivers-come-focus-high-res-climate-model)

As the announcement points out, the researchers were able to adapt an existing weather model to give much sharper predictions of exactly where an atmospheric river will deposits its precipitation.  That could be especially important if you are potentially in harm's way from this sort of heavy rain and/or snow fall.  While California?s "Pineapple Express" storms are legendary, Atmospheric Rivers happen all over the world - even in the United Kingdom!

So there is something for every kind of "WeatherCatter" in this piece.

Enjoy!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Interesting stuff, Edouard. I'd never heard of them until you brought them to our attention last year on this forum. Thanks for sharing.
