Yosemite has some sort of memory garbage collection going.
« on: November 22, 2014, 11:19:06 PM »
Dear WeatherCat Yosemite hikers,

I'm still not very happy with Yosemite, but it appears that something new is going on with the way memory is managed.  This morning I saw something entirely unexpected on the WeatherCat memory use graph:

As you can see from the elapsed time growl, WeatherCat had not restarted, but memory use had dropped by almost 100 Mb!!

So I'm not sure what is going on, but somehow Yosemite is taking care of what appeared to be an OS service memory leak by some sort of garbage collection process.

I just upgraded to 10.10.1 this afternoon.  We'll see what new surprises are in store!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Interesting! I never check my memory usage, but I usually just run WC. If I play a game or some such, I try to remember to restart the iMac when done, knowing that other programs can kick up snowballs rolling downhill that linger after they leave.

So far, so good. Still on 10.10.
Herb

10.10.1 more memory hog (Re: Memory garbage collection going.)

Dear Herb and WeatherCat OS X monitors,

Sorry, I really need to release these updated AppleScripts.  It is extremely easy to monitor WeatherCat memory when you have a WeatherCat custom graph.  Speaking of which for some reason OS 10.10.1 seems to accelerating the use of memory by WeatherCat.  Here is the latest graph:

I'll see if I have to restart WeatherCat to deal with my station woes, but otherwise it will be interesting to see if the same garbage collection phenomenon occurs.

Caught in the act!! (Re: Memory garbage collection going.)

Dear WeatherCat memory dieters,

Well OS 10.10.1 started out like a hog, but it put itself back on a diet in a hurry:

This morning WeatherCat 2 was using less memory on Yosemite than I had ever seen it use under Mavericks.  However, once more memory use is growing, although at the moment closer to what was happening under Mavericks.

Very curious.  I wonder if this is a band-aid for a bug or some sort of very clever feature?
