Davis AeroCone
« on: February 15, 2017, 01:45:29 AM »
I'm a sucker for the latest and greatest, even if it is just marketing hype.

I see Davis has a new rain cone.

Strangely, it's not on Davis's site. Any thoughts on this? Also, I was thinking, as a VP2+ owner, I could just get the bucket version for $27 and not the full gauge system for $77?

For $27 I was about to click "buy" but thought I'd get people's opinions here first. Thanks,

dfw

Probably uses less plastic, thus is cheaper to make. Any other benefits might be accidental! OTOH, the slope may be steeper, less need for dangerous, rain-repellant chemicals!

Not sure about those 'vents', however. While there's not much inside the area that would be harmed by water, it just looks like it could be more inviting for eight-legged, web-dispensing critters... On the third hand, it might make removing the whole thing a bit easier. The current slick-sided 'tub' can be difficult to get a grip on! [banghead] I've not found one of those oil filter, loop type 'grabbers' that is big enough! What size oil filters does a 74 use? :P [lol]

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

More accurate
« Reply #2 on: February 15, 2017, 02:11:59 AM »
Supposedly it's more accurate in windy places - and my station is in a windy location. It's supposed to correct for lower rain readings, and my station usually reads low compared to a $3 gauge next to it. Is it all fluff? I don't know. Does the $3 gauge get affected by wind like the bucket does? I don't know.

Oil filter strap . . . Good idea!

My 2? worth is worth exactly that. From what I read, I like the debris filter and the aerodynamic design.

I think it would provide a good service to your fellow WeatherCatters to invest $27, install it and post a writeup for us here in this thread.

I don't think those are vents, those are things to grip when installing and removing the cone.   Well I get mine tomorrow.  I'll take pictures

I'm guessing that my old DAVIS heater element isn't going to fit in this.....

no wait

Right you are! This new cone does not accommodate the heater. They have a different cone that includes the purchase of a heater that you have to buy if you need a new cone. They no longer sell the old replacement cone, so when you need a replacement cone, and you have a heater, you will have to buy a new heater as well. At least this was the explanation I got from Scientific Sales.  :(

So if I have a VP2+, do I get the $77 rain gauge or the $27 collector only?

Thanks

you get the new cone. Here is mine installed and some shots of the underside.  the debris screen snaps in.  there are also bird spikes.
IF Your solar/uv sensors are still on the back, there are instructions on how to move them to the front to avoid shadows

Hey, looks great!

Sorry I wasn't more clear. If I already have a VP2+, should I buy the 6465, the 6463, or the 6462?

Thanks.

I put the other cone in the basement in case this one is a bust. we can always plug the drain hole and remove the spikes. It will make a neat bee mug   [rockon]
