Moods of the sky around our weather instruments 2016-17
« on: September 23, 2016, 10:58:31 PM »
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

Now that it is officially autumn, I think it is time to start a new thread to feature the moods of the sky around our weather instruments.  To get this show on the road how about a placid condensation trail above my anemometer:

It may be autumn, but in California the hottest weather of the year is frequently in autumn.  Sunday's forecast high is certainly close to setting a new annual record and last year the hottest day was also in September.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

We had our first snow fall of the season today, just a dusting which melted right off, but it's definitely time to think about winter coming on. Here's what the mountain looks like today.

Apparently that front also brought some less 'attractive' and seldom seen weather to your State. I wasn't aware that "Tornado Alley" had spread to Utah! :o I'll take several feet of snow instead, any day!

Dear Blick, X-Air, and WeatherCat observers of the changing seasons,

We had our first snow fall of the season today, just a dusting which melted right off, but it's definitely time to think about winter coming on. Here's what the mountain looks like today.

That's a beautiful picture and the station is just what it should be - present but not distracting.

What a difference one day makes.

Congratulations on the early start of the wet season!  Let's hope we don't end up with another dry La Nina year!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Red sky but only drizzle (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)

Dear WeatherCat observers of the changing skies,

This morning I was greeted by this dramatic site:

Just as the sun was rising the scene got even more dramatic:

We did get some drizzle but not enough to cause even one bucket tip.  So for Northern California the wait for the first rains continue.

Cheers, Edouard

Dear WeatherCat observers of the changing skies,

The storm had passed but this morning I was greeted by the following cloud formation:

Definitely a pretty sight even if didn't mean any more rain.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

We'll probably have a short Fall color "show" due to less-than-average rain fall this year. However, between the first two Super Moons, this is the first capture of our biggest Maple.

Thanks for sharing!  :)  I've been keeping an eye on the "usual" fall color suspects, but trees aren't turning as they usually do here in California.  No surprise but a bit of a disappointment.

Cheers, Edouard

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

It is starting to be that time of year when we get really beautiful sunrise clouds.  Just after I got up I was greeted by this:

The colors were extremely delicate against the still very dark sky.  After about 20 minutes the scene had changed to this:

I was able to take advantage of my Canon EOS 70D built-in HDR capability on this photo.  It isn't as convenient as the iPhone, but that is to be expected to have the additional control you expect for a serious amateur semi-pro camera.

Enjoy!  :)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Dear X-Air and WeatherCat shutterbugs, . . . .

One of the lakes I walk around at least 4 times a week. Just down the street. It's a rather upper-class town, but we cut a hole in the fence where they can't find it!

Thanks for the picture.  I'm glad you can sneak your camera through that hole in the fence!!  ;D

I know Edouard will delete this post if I don't include a PWS. Would you believe it's on the tower in the shot below?

Well, I wouldn't have deleted a pretty shot like that, but . . . you could have posted it on the scenes of autumn thread instead!

I would have, if I'd seen that new thread before posting them here. I'll delete the post here and repost there. Or, since you have nothing to do on Sunday evenings, you can do it! cmu:-)

Hi Folks,

This time of year, Oct-Nov, the sunrise has moved southwards and can result in nice colors reflected on clouds over the mountains. In December the sun will rise directly over the mountains, which rise about 1000m over the valley and lake. This photo was taken with my Canon Powershot computer-controlled webcam pointed SE. I have it set at 10 minute intervals.

Regards, Irving
