Cant see station (La Crosse WS2355)
« on: December 31, 2012, 12:59:15 AM »
I am (trying to be) a new user.

I have downloaded and installed the USB driver mentioned in the WC manual but WC cannot see the station (WS2355).  I have checked the connections.  No joy.

Any thoughts?

Hi,
If it came with a serial to USB dongle, these are typically FTDI chipsets - you can get the driver at http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm (the current version is 2.2.18 - download: http://www.ftdichip.com/drivers/VCP/MacOSX/FTDIUSBSerialDriver_v2_2_18.dmg

If that doesn't work then it's probably a different chipset in the dongle - you may be able to find out what it is by going to the Apple menu, selecting 'About This Mac' then clicking the 'More Info...' button to open the 'System Information' application. Make sure the dongle is plugged into the computer then check the USB information - with a bit of luck you'll find the dongle there and it'll tell you which chipset it's using.

Thanks WCDev,

I had already downloaded the FTDI driver but didn't get anywhere with it.  I may not have installed it correctly (or completely) or it may have been the wrong one.  However your suggestion to look up the System Information got me on the right track.  The dongle is a Unitek Y-105 but there was no Mac driver on the Unitek site (even though it said that it worked with Mac).  However the System Info showed the device as a "Prolific Technology, Inc. 2303D".

I then found this link that explains almost everything - http://plugable.com/2011/07/12/installing-a-usb-serial-adapter-on-mac-os-x.  The screens in this link match exactly with what I saw.

Of course it is a generic instruction so when you get to the end you need to start WeatherCat and select the port named  "/dev/cu.usbserial" .

Everything is now working brilliantly.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  Hopefully this will help someone else in the future.
