Title: Lightning Detector --> Future Feature?
Post by: schwab on April 21, 2013, 02:54:35 AM
Any chance an upcoming version of WeatherCat will include Lightning Detection?

Weather Display has this feature for the 1-wire detector.

Thanks.

blitzortung.org (http://en.blitzortung.org/live_lightning_maps.php?map=30)... "Fireworks for your Mac!" Of course, those detectors and their reporting hardware are rather expensive.

I also like the local radar display via Wunderground (as long as it lasts...), it's main problem is the built-in delay, but the forecast track and speed are a big help. Of course, it's not much help if one does not have the display available; driving, shopping, etc. I'm not sure how the one-wire system would help if it doesn't also have accurate direction info and that is mainly a product of the size and strength of the cumulonimbus(es) movement. As you know, the fact that lightening has been detected in one place is not very good at predicting where the next strike will occur. That's why I always added another ten miles to the SOP distances! ThU32:-) [rolleyes2]

Looks like another project for our "in-house" electronics guru (and his Dad [Reinhard])!

Haha, yes. At 500 knots, I'm always happy to go an extra 10 miles or so.

I'd love to have something like a map and strike indicator on my website. Time and money I guess.

Very interesting... indeed!  [interesting]

@schwab:
Why not doing it via Synthetic Channel?

Hopefully considering adding the Blitzortung Lightning Detectors to WeatherCat will be considered for new WC versions

Here's a map of this network:
