Interesting open-source music player in progress: Tomahawk
« on: August 18, 2017, 10:19:32 PM »
Dear WeatherCat audiophiles,

The MacWorld website has an article on the top 25 free applications for the Mac:

http://www.macworld.com/article/2990355/mac-apps/20-free-os-x-apps-every-mac-user-should-have.html

Most of these applications I was aware of or didn't need.  However, there was one which is interesting if not quite ready for prime-time: Tomahawk:

https://www.tomahawk-player.org/

It is an open-source music player that seems to be trying to take back the role that iTunes once promised to provide: a one-stop portal for all your music.  It can access your music files on your computer and also has quite a few plugins to allow you access Internet streaming services such as Spotify.  Alas, at the moment it doesn't support two Internet streaming services I rely upon a great deal.  It also cannot import iTunes playlists which means it cannot be used as a lightweight replacement for iTunes.

However, Tomahawk has a "secret weapon."  It can be extended using plugins written in JavaScript.  So while it might not have the capabilities you want at the moment, this could change at any time.  Since it is an open-source project, you can't beat the price - free!  So this looks like a project to keep an eye on.  While Tomahawk might not be all that useful right now, it could become very handy sometime in the future.
