Traditional Bay Area fog . . . . (Re: Moods of the sky .. 2015-16)

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

It has been almost 2 months since anyone has contributed anything to this thread so it seemed like a good time to give it a bump.  June and July were very hot and atypical of the San Francisco, but August has been unusually cool with daily visits of the famous San Francisco fog.  I caught this photo of the fog lifting this morning:

This is what I remember about summers in East Bay.   :)

Okay, who can capture some interesting atmospheric vistas as we start the transition from Summer to Autumn?

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Why doesn't CA trap all that fog and cool it just a bit to create some rain?! It's already at 99.999% humidity!

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

Some moisture from Hurricane Madeline made it as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area.  That led to a pretty set of clouds at dusk:

The good news is we got no dry lightning strikes that could started new fires.  The bad news is got absolutely no rain either.

Oh well, . . . .  Edouard

Autumn starting early? (Re: Moods of the sky .. 2015-16)

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs, . . . .

The unusually cool August has been followed by an equally cool September thus far.  The trees are definitely starting to turn and this morning I was greeted by a very unusual early morning scene:

Normally, I can't take photos like this until November!  Not sure what it means, but it sure seems like we are in for an early autumn and winter.

Cheers, Edouard

Hi Folks,
Here is a timelapse test:  Taking stills each minute over about an hour. Setting first Project Properties in imovie menu: a 1s transit duration and the fit in frame setting. Dragging stills from iphoto to project window of imovie 09. This insures that each photo is fixed without Ken Burns movement. Saved as a .mov and uploaded to Youtube.
Here is the result. Nothing spectacular with this sunrise but the method works. I think Reinhard may have done the same with his star timelapse.   https://youtu.be/sbkLWJKPCjs

Very nice. It must be nice to wake up to such beautiful sky and mountains every day! Hope you never take them for granted!

Might I suggest a cross-fade (simultaneous fade out and in) transition? Since there are very few moving objects, the fade out while the next fades in might be less noticeable than the 1 sec swap. Even changing the transition to 1.5 or even 2 seconds may make the fades almost invisible.

I used to use lots of transitions when making Keynote displays, the older versions, anyway, I think they've pretty much crippled the new versions to make it look like an old fashioned, poorly made Powerpoint show. [banghead] It was extremely easy to add music as part of the transition, also. You can then output the presentation as a QuickTime movie, including the audio! Audio is not than difficult in iMovie, however.

Thanks Xair. Your suggestions were very useful in improving my method for making smooth timelapse videos with iMovie 09. The "Project Properties" I set to give a transition crossover of 1 sec and photo duration 1 sec. The 77 stills could be dragged as a block to the Project window.  That finishes everything except for maybe dragging in music and writing titles. I then made a Quicktime .move file and uploaded to Youtube.
The results are here.

Just to further clarify the Project Properties settings in iMovie which are useful for timelapse videos (from still photos), here are two attachments.

Hi Folks,
Think I am getting more interested in timelapse videos from stills. I have a Sony hx300, one of those automatic do everything cameras with 50x optical zoom.  Started wondering how I could make it automatically take many photos at set intervals, which it does not do itself.  Had a look at Amazon and Aliexpress, my favorite China seller. I finally did order a timer for my camera from China at a cost of about $17 and no mailing charges.  Here is a description and photo of the timer. Of course you have to have a suitable compatible camera, but there are lots of timers on the market.

I have a Sony a6000. This model does not allow the use of an external power supply to keep the camera functioning. The external power supply can only be used to charge the battery while the camera is off. Consequently, you can only use time-lapse for as long as the battery lasts. This also applies to the a6300. Sony corrected this in the newest model, the a6500.
