Title: Twitter - Password change
Post by: wurzelmac on May 04, 2018, 11:19:25 AM
How can I tell WeatherCat that I have changed my password for Twitter?

Thanks in advance,

You should be able to change in OS Systems Preferences/Internet Accounts. I don't have Twitter integration any longer, but that would be my best guess.

Reinhard:

Have you tried this?

Should you wish to change the account you are posting from in the future, you'll need to delete the authorisation data from your keychain. To do this, quit WeatherCat, open Keychain access, search for 'WeatherCat Twitter' and delete it. Launch WeatherCat and open the Twitter uploader, it will then ask you to sign in to Twitter again.

Alan, Blick:

Thanks for looking at this post. Magically my posts are twittered without some interaction needed on my side. Although I have changed my Twitter-password on Twitter.  ::) Changing happens on a different Computer than that is running WeatherCat.  [computer]
However - I will have a look at it.

Cheers,

Don't look too closely, or else it may stop working. Never fix what ain't broken.

Dear Reinhard, Alan, Blick, and WeatherCat sys-admins,

When it comes to software technology these days caution is indeed the better part of valor.  However, in this case amazingly what you are observing is a feature not a bug.  Twitter uses a different sort of authentication mechanism to recognize applications.  You need to supply your password to give an app permission to access Twitter, but Twitter will "remember" that application independently of your password "from then on"*.

 ;) . . . . *Until of course Twitter forgets! . . . .  [rolleyes2]

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Nice explanation, thanks Edouard!

Those using Twitter have probably received a message about "an error" in their password handling. Seems they stored the password before it was hashed as well as afterward. Of course, they say "we have no reason to believe password information ever left Twitter's systems or was misused by anyone" to the file containing those plain text passwords... the key word there is "believe". Obviously, people can "believe" anything. [rolleyes2] Just ask the majority of voters! cmu:-)

Now that we know how to make WC aware of a new password, it might be a useful weekend project to change your Twitter password? Then, you too, can "believe" that things are secure. [lol]

Yes, as noted above what WeatherCat stores is a token generated by Twitter when you authorise it. You need your Twitter password for this operation (which happens on Twitter's web-site over an encrypted connection) but WeatherCat never sees your password - all it gets is the token. As it's using a token generated by Twitter, if your Twitter password changes it doesn't affect the token WeatherCat is using and so it carries on working.

Great! I very much dislike shutting down WC for any reason! Especially due to other site's problems. Even worse from those I don't really use! [rolleyes2]
