Title: New Feature Request: PurpleAir Air Quality Sensor
Post by: schwab on November 09, 2017, 03:47:58 PM
I recently installed a PurpleAir brand air quality Sensor that is uploading realtime data to Wunderground.

Click on the Green Dot in the zoomable map here:

These air quality sensors have been shown to be quite accurate when compared to much, much more expensive air quality sensors.

They have been promoted by the Wunderground network which is how I learned about this new amateur weather watcher option.

During the registration process PurpleAir gives new users options of where data is supposed to flow...eg Wunderground

Air Quality may be a measure that future versions of Weathercat may wish to include as a new option to display and log.

AirQuality is also available at this site: https://www.airnow.gov/

Dear schwab and WeatherCat seekers of fresh clean air,

I recently installed a PurpleAir brand air quality Sensor that is uploading realtime data to Wunderground.

. . . .

These air quality sensors have been shown to be quite accurate when compared to much, much more expensive air quality sensors.

Air Quality may be a measure that future versions of Weathercat may wish to include as a new option to display and log.

It is a worthy suggestion that I also find interesting, but there is significant obstacle.  The PurpleAir sensors send their data directly to PurpleAir.  WeatherCat would need some way to query either the PurpleAir or possibly the MesoWest or Weather Underground servers to get the data from your sensor.  There doesn't appear to be any way WeatherCat could access the sensor directly.

I see that under the Frequently Asked Questions there might be a way to ask for more information.  Here is the link:

https://www.purpleair.com/faq (https://www.purpleair.com/faq)

The last question and answer are:

Quote
How can I get PurpleAir data?

The simplest way to view our data is the PurpleAir Map. Data is also available on MesoWest's network and others. We frequently share raw data with researchers. If you want access to data for whatever reason, please feel free to contact us.

The "contact us" text includes a link so that you could ask the company.  If you would like to help Stu implement this, you could help by contacting the company and asking if there is a way for a software developer to access data from an individual sensor.  Anything you can do to help Stu, increases the odds it might happen. :)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Here's a link to a page with PurpleAir Sensor Technical Data and Manuals with the developer's name.

Title: Thanks for the legwork! (Re: PurpleAir Air Quality Sensor )

Dear Tom and WeatherCat seekers of clean air,

Here is the info you will need that was received from a Purple Air

Thanks for doing the legwork!  [tup]  Their implementation is interesting in that it is (as I suspected) going to their own servers to get the data.  That means that not only WeatherCat could make queries like this but any of the more sophisticated web templates like Saratoga, Leuven-Template, or Meteotemplate could also put this data directly on their websites.  If you are using any of these templates (or even if you aren't,) you might try lobbying these developers and see what comes up.  They might be able to add this more quickly that Stu can do this for WeatherCat directly.

Cheers, Edouard

Weatherdisplay has a routine for gathering the data,  you might see how Brian did his.

Just curious if PurpleAir integration is still a possibility? I just purchased a unit this week. There is some rumbling that WU will be able to access and show PurpleAir data. And as mentioned Weather Display has this feature so there has to be a fairly (?) straightforward way if accessing data.

The original request for including PurpleAir Air Quality Monitor data in WeatherCat's next version is now 2 years old...the number of PurpleAir Air Quality monitors has increased widely...see the map below...be patient while the map link loads...then zoom in to your locale...
