Title: Jazz musician at the intersection of weather and computers.
Post by: elagache on April 19, 2014, 10:02:40 PM
Dear WeatherCat musicologists,

Even if we have some talented musicians on the WeatherCat forum, music is rarely a topic, but perhaps we can make an exception for this odd tale.  Recently I rediscovered the smooth jazz musician Chris Geith (http://chrisgeith.com/).  I first heard his music on the first incarnation of the music website MP3.com.  This was back around Y2K (2000) and MP3 files were something geeks were stuffing their computers with  Back then, Chris had formed The Chris Geith Group and had released the album "Prime Time.".  With that album, the band has been #1 in the contemporary jazz, Jazz Fusion, and Contemporary Urban/ R&B charts on MP3.com.  At the time, MP3.com was only specializing in independent music and thus wasn't offending anybody.

Then MP3.com had a "great idea."  ::)  They attempted to launch something analogous to what Amazon today calls "Auto-Zip."  Unfortunately, those geeks running MP3.com didn't take seriously the lawyers of the music industry.  As one should have expected, the lawyers promptly put MP3.com out of business and in so doing a source of independent music vanished.  Artists like Chris Geith were thrown back out into the cold.

This is where the connection with weather comes in.  Chris was commissioned to write some music for the Weather Channel and thus got a second chance at success.   Eventually, music by independent artists became fashionable once more and outfits like CD-Baby (http://www.cdbaby.com) were created to sell music much as MP3.com once had.

So if you are curious to hear some of the music that you might have heard on Weather Channel program like: "Local on the 8s".  You can find some of Chris's music on You-Tube:

If you decide you like this style of music you can actually get you hands on it using either the iTunes store or CD-Baby:

Thus ends a more unusual tale of weather and technology!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]
