Title: Moods of the sky around our weather instruments 2016-17
Post by: elagache on September 23, 2016, 10:58:31 PM
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

Now that it is officially autumn, I think it is time to start a new thread to feature the moods of the sky around our weather instruments.  To get this show on the road how about a placid condensation trail above my anemometer:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-KXqKQKC/0/XL/Condensation%20trail%20behind%20anemometer%20at%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-KXqKQKC/A)

It may be autumn, but in California the hottest weather of the year is frequently in autumn.  Sunday's forecast high is certainly close to setting a new annual record and last year the hottest day was also in September.

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

We had our first snow fall of the season today, just a dusting which melted right off, but it's definitely time to think about winter coming on. Here's what the mountain looks like today.

Apparently that front also brought some less 'attractive' and seldom seen weather to your State. I wasn't aware that "Tornado Alley" had spread to Utah! :o I'll take several feet of snow instead, any day!

Dear Blick, X-Air, and WeatherCat observers of the changing seasons,

We had our first snow fall of the season today, just a dusting which melted right off, but it's definitely time to think about winter coming on. Here's what the mountain looks like today.

That's a beautiful picture and the station is just what it should be - present but not distracting.

What a difference one day makes.

Congratulations on the early start of the wet season!  Let's hope we don't end up with another dry La Nina year!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]
Title: Red sky but only drizzle (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)
Post by: elagache on October 03, 2016, 11:32:45 PM
Dear WeatherCat observers of the changing skies,

This morning I was greeted by this dramatic site:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-tFK4kN8/0/XL/Orange%20red%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-tFK4kN8/A)

Just as the sun was rising the scene got even more dramatic:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-x7Sr2Q4/0/X2/Orange%20red%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20at%20dawn%20-X2.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-x7Sr2Q4/A)

We did get some drizzle but not enough to cause even one bucket tip.  So for Northern California the wait for the first rains continue.

Cheers, Edouard

Dear WeatherCat observers of the changing skies,

The storm had passed but this morning I was greeted by the following cloud formation:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-fs8TzPg/0/XL/Red%20plume%20of%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-fs8TzPg/A)

Definitely a pretty sight even if didn't mean any more rain.

We'll probably have a short Fall color "show" due to less-than-average rain fall this year. However, between the first two Super Moons, this is the first capture of our biggest Maple.

Thanks for sharing!  :)  I've been keeping an eye on the "usual" fall color suspects, but trees aren't turning as they usually do here in California.  No surprise but a bit of a disappointment.

Title: A fiery dawn! (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)
Post by: elagache on October 22, 2016, 11:04:44 PM
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

It is starting to be that time of year when we get really beautiful sunrise clouds.  Just after I got up I was greeted by this:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-6djLkzc/0/XL/Fiery%20sky%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-6djLkzc/A)

The colors were extremely delicate against the still very dark sky.  After about 20 minutes the scene had changed to this:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-Kk32tkG/0/XL/Fiery%20sky%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-Kk32tkG/A)

I was able to take advantage of my Canon EOS 70D built-in HDR capability on this photo.  It isn't as convenient as the iPhone, but that is to be expected to have the additional control you expect for a serious amateur semi-pro camera.

Enjoy!  :)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Dear X-Air and WeatherCat shutterbugs, . . . .

One of the lakes I walk around at least 4 times a week. Just down the street. It's a rather upper-class town, but we cut a hole in the fence where they can't find it!

Thanks for the picture.  I'm glad you can sneak your camera through that hole in the fence!!  ;D

I know Edouard will delete this post if I don't include a PWS. Would you believe it's on the tower in the shot below?

Well, I wouldn't have deleted a pretty shot like that, but . . . you could have posted it on the scenes of autumn thread instead!

Hi Folks,

This time of year, Oct-Nov, the sunrise has moved southwards and can result in nice colors reflected on clouds over the mountains. In December the sun will rise directly over the mountains, which rise about 1000m over the valley and lake. This photo was taken with my Canon Powershot computer-controlled webcam pointed SE. I have it set at 10 minute intervals.

Regards, Irving

Title: A bruding evening cloud bank . . . (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)
Post by: elagache on October 27, 2016, 11:55:48 PM
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs, . . . .

We are expecting stormy weather but the sunrise skies have not been the dramatic color associated with: "red sky at morning - sailor's warning."  Nonetheless, Tuesday evening we had this very unusual colorful cloud bank:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-BPrCwsg/0/XL/Cloud%20bank%20above%20anemometer%20at%20dusk%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-BPrCwsg/A)

Evening shots are rare indeed given the location of my weather instruments.  So here's something as a change of pace!

Enjoy!    :)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

Yesterday we had a nice display of red-orange clouds shortly before dawn:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-LRFZd2Q/0/XL/Bands%20of%20orange-red%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-LRFZd2Q/A)

Alas the pretty red colors didn't bring us any rain.  After a great October, November is definitely starting dry.

Oh well,. . . . . Edouard

Dear Steve, Irving, and WeatherCat observers of the changing skies,

Thanks for sharing Irving your pictorial forecast.  You have a wonderful vantage point for your webcam!

Alas here in California high pressure is back in control.  A weak storm tried to push its way in this morning but couldn't generate a single bucket tip at my station.

After a feast of rainfall for October, we are back to the famine of drought thus far in November . . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/desert-smiley.gif)

Post by: elagache on November 21, 2016, 11:42:09 PM
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

It has been an uninspired November from my photographic vantage point.  However, this morning finally produced something with a bit of color:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-28CPKfV/0/XL/Patchy%20fog%20behind%20anemometer%20at%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-28CPKfV/A)

Hopefully there will be more dramatic photos in the future, but in the meantime this will give this thread another little bump!

Who's next?

Post by: elagache on November 22, 2016, 11:33:47 PM
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

Sorry to hog, but I have a very unusual picture to add to the one I took yesterday morning.  Here is what the anemometer looked like shortly before dusk:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-MSbpLPK/0/X2/Colorful%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dusk%20-X2.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-MSbpLPK/A)

It is extremely unusual to have colorful clouds on the Eastern horizon as the sun is setting in the West.  I don't recall ever being able to take photos of clouds behind my anemometer during the morning and evening of the same day!

Okay, enough digression. . . . .   I once more repeat . . . . . who's next!!  :D

Dear Irving, Blick, and WeatherCat lovers of beautiful sunrises,

This morning I experienced the most colorful sunrise imaginable.

It is very wonderful Irving!  I have wanted to make a time-lapse of some of the sunrises at our house, I just never learned out to do it with my DSLR.

My trusty webcam took photos at 5 minute intervals. Here they are on Youtube.

Is there any chance you could shorten the intervals?  5 minutes is a bit too long to really get any fluid motion.  I know Reinhard mentioned something about that but I've forgotten.

Somehow I think the resolution could be better but the colors are ok.

The resolution seems a bit low given the camera setup you have.  What got uploaded is only 640x360.  Is this the video generated by WeatherCat?  Perhaps you should check the resolution settings under the webcam pane of the WeatherCat preferences.

Thanks again for sharing!  [tup]

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Hi folks

The original photos were put into iMovie. The loss of resolution seems to be when converting for Youtube. For some reason Youtube did not like my password so I made a .mp4 and also a .mov file then uploaded to my Irandar Youtube channel. I simply do not know how to get the most out of Youtube. I would be glad to hear from someone with Youtube experience.

I now changed to 60 sec intervals. This will give a bit better timelapse effect. But I was really interested in the different colors, not so much in the movement. To save the photos I need to put them manually from Preview to iPhoto. This just takes one click.

Now waiting for the sunrise.

Hi Irving and WeatherCat video makers,

The loss of resolution seems to be when converting for Youtube. For some reason Youtube did not like my password so I made a .mp4 and also a .mov file then uploaded to my Irandar Youtube channel. I simply do not know how to get the most out of Youtube. I would be glad to hear from someone with Youtube experience.

I've had trouble with You-Tube refusing to allow me to login because privacy software I run that limits what sort of cookies the You-Tube site can use.  You might look to see how your browser is configured that might be the real reason for not being able to login.

How do you convert movies from Quicktime (.mov) to MPEG4 (.mp4) ?

If you haven't tried the open source converter called HandBrake, you might try that:

https://handbrake.fr/ (https://handbrake.fr/)

You-Tube still complains about some sort of video format issue when I upload videos converted by HandBrake, but at least the videos upload and can be seen.

Thanks for sharing what you webcam can observe!

There hasn't been much to photograph lately, but the storms at the end of November finally brought us some colorful sunrises.  This isn't an "A+" picture, but it is nice nonetheless:

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

It was an ominous start to Christmas day on my deck this morning:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-nBgtqMD/0/XL/Orange%20cloud%20bands%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-nBgtqMD/A)

However, in this case appearances are deceiving.  The storm that produced these clouds remained out to sea and is supposed to come ashore only in Southern California.  The only notable weather around here is the unusual cold.

Cheers, Edouard

P.S. this particular photo is underexposed by 2/3 EV and used my Canon 70D built-in HDR system set to 1 EV.

Hi folks,
I am still reeling from that photo of Mount Adams. I would love to have my webcam working there.
Finally worked out the best solution for the Youtube resolution with iMovie 09. I have to choose the wide format otherwise the HD is not available. So I did that with my old sunrise timelapses, from stills taken 1 each min, and they look much better. The duration is set for 1 sec, making one minute videos for one hour of sunrise. I had to remove the copyrighted music to ensure not being block in some countries but Youtube left some squeaks in between.
Mountain views sometimes look like this foggy webcam attached. Extreme high pressure these last weeks has caused a lot of dense fog at low altitudes but it sometimes moves up higher.
Wishing all a good start in the New Year,
Irving

Dear glenwood, Irving, and WeatherCat shutterbugs, . . .

Beautiful images and videos!!  Thanks for sharing!!

Finally worked out the best solution for the Youtube resolution with iMovie 09. I have to choose the wide format otherwise the HD is not available.

Your latest videos are now 854x480.  That is better but clearly you have more data that iMovie is allowing you to take advantage of.  Assuming you are interested enough, is there any chance you could upgrade your version of iMovie?  2009 is now 8 years old.  That could be the reason you can make true HD videos.

Cheers, Edouard

Hi Edouard,
Strange about my 480 resolution on Youtube. I uploaded at HD 720.  Anyway I am reasonably happy with the results. My old Mac running 10.9.5 seems not to be beyond any further upgrading. After much googling I am pretty sure that iMovie above 09 is not possible. Someday maybe I'll get a new computer. Here is another recent sunrise video.
Happy New Year to all,
Irving

iMovie 10.1.4 does require OS X 10.11.2 or later. In honor of Apple's inconsistent version numbering of the iLife apps, I offer the following concerning iMovie:
The last version available for Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9 and later) is version10.0.5. [rolleyes2] [goofy]
Quote from: Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMovie)
Movie 10.0 was released on October 22, 2013 by Apple Inc. This version of iMovie was a complete redesign with more options to share a movie, more movie and trailer theme options from iMovie for iOS, easier to make picture-in-pictures, cutaways, side-by-sides etc., more realistic green-screen effects and easier refinements. Wikipedia/iMovie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMovie)

Finally, while you can find several sites offering a download of iMovie 10.0.5, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend any of them. There are simply too many malware-infected files available out there, even malware for a Mac!

It may be possible to use the Mac App Store and find a newer version of iMovie than the one you have. Open MAS and use the "Purchased" tab, click (or double-click) the iMovies item and see if a newer version is available for your machine.

Hi Xair,
I did not find that iMovie 10 is available for my 10.9.5. Everything in the  app store was for 10.11 and 10.12. I wish Apple or someone would give such a clear listing as you do.
Thanks,
Irving

Dear WeatherCat users who like old weather sayings . . . .

The old saying: "Red sky at morning - sailor's warning" came true this morning:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-PZfVv4x/0/XL/Orange%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-PZfVv4x/A)

I ran around all day to get ready for the next series of storms.  The forecast remains as ominous as the picture.  I hope my preparations are good enough!

Cheers, Edouard

Blick,
nice shot. We should have winter here in the alps, too - but this year we have had nearly no snowfall till now. We are waiting on some 40 to 50 cm's, hopefully sometimes in February it will snow.  ???

Still winter here.

Uh yes! I do declare that it does look like winter in your photograph!  [snow]  At the rate things are going, perhaps you will need to move your ISS so that it doesn't get buried in the snow! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/eek2.gif)

8 feet (2.44 metres) of snow so far this month. I do have extra so I can ship it to you for no charge. All you have to do is pay our shipping and handling fees (plus import and custom fees). Let me know how much you want.  [snowflake] [snowflake]

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs, . . . . . .

Apparently, a lot of rain means fewer photogenic sunrises in my neck of the woods.  This morning wasn't a top-drawer display, but it definitely was different than what I usually come across:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-c52L37S/0/XL/Misty%20ominous%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-c52L37S/A)

What makes this picture even more unusual is that this was an effect on fog only.  When the sun finally rose, there were no clouds above the fog.  It is an unusual coloration of very low-level marine moisture.

Enjoy the change of pace!  :)

This afternoon, I climbed the pile of snow and ice at the end of my driveway and did some maintenance on my ISS. For the first time in history, I did not have to use a ladder. We will end up with just about 10 feet of snowfall here for the month.

Can't figure out what the middle photo uploads sideways. Too much ice tipped the camera over I guess.

Hi folks,
Had a weather change last night. A south wind brought the temperature above freezing for the first time in a month. Such winds, called Foehn, coming over the mountains often lead to colorful sunrises. Here it is on Youtube caught by my webcam each minute and processed by iMovie.

I can't figure that one out either.  Your iPhone sent the correct orientation data along with the photo:

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

We have what amounts to a "dirty ridge" which is keep the temperatures pleasant, but allowing some high clouds to drift over the region.  Before sunrise this morning, these high clouds were lit up in this very pretty display:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-P6pJxPZ/0/XL/Hazy%20orange-yellow%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-P6pJxPZ/A)

It almost made up for standing outside in the very chilly air to take the pictures!  [freeze]

Title: Another menacing forecast. . . (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)
Post by: elagache on February 04, 2017, 11:12:12 PM
Dear WeatherCat observers of the sky,

Shortly after I got up this morning this is what the Eastern horizon looked like:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-r6G8Dc3/0/XL/Arch%20of%20reddish%20orange%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-r6G8Dc3/A)

The cloud formation is consistent with the National Weather Service which is forecasting another atmospheric river to take aim at Northern California for most of next week.  The good news is that should dump still more snow.  The bad news is that invariably there will be still more storm related damage.

Such are the "feast or famine" conditions in the Western United States these days,

Edouard
Title: Another fiery forecast (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)
Post by: elagache on February 15, 2017, 11:35:45 PM
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

A approaching front made quite a sunrise display this morning:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-DHvNM7n/0/XL/Cloud%20bands%20behind%20anemometer%20after%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-DHvNM7n/A)

Oddly, about 1/2 hour later the sky turned a menacing red:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-5BVgJQK/0/XL/Reddish%20cloud%20bands%20behind%20anemometer%20after%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-5BVgJQK/A)

All this is consistent with the forecast.  The rain starts tomorrow and is expected to last at least 7 days.  However, there is some relief in the climate forecast.  The 8-14 outlook now is neutral instead of above normal rainfall and the experimental week 3-4 outlook is for below normal rainfall.

We shall see . . . . .

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

This morning we had the sort sunrise that is to be expected as the seasons transition from Winter to Spring:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-ZXZdHJC/0/XL/Orange%20yellow%20cloud%20bands%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-ZXZdHJC/A)

After all the rain, the weather is more like late Spring than early March.  Today's high was almost 74˚ F! (23.3˚ C)

Title: More ominous forecast and acronym . . . (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)
Post by: elagache on March 15, 2017, 09:54:15 PM
Dear WeatherCat observers of the extremes of the 2017 winter,

This morning before sunrise there was what would appear to be to a more ominous forecast:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-STXM9W3/0/XL/Colorful%20cloud%20band%20behind%20anemometer%20before%20dawn%20-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-STXM9W3/A)

It is premature.  We aren't supposed to get any rain before Monday night.  However, there was something on an ominous development in this morning's forecast discussion from the Monterey office of the National Weather Service.  The disturbing paragraph went like this:

Quote
Although there remains some difference with timing, there is fairly good that three systems can be expected (Tuesday, Wednesday/Thursday, and then next weekend). Whether or not we end up getting an atmospheric river (AR) setup from any of the     systems remains to be seen. However, both the GFS operational and ensemble mean indicated IVT values over 300 kg/m/s. Going out further, ECMWF guidance does indicate a potential AR with the system next weekend.

Are we getting so many Atmospheric River events that we really need the acronym: AR ?!?! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/eek-sign.gif)

Title: Fair weather clouds . . . (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)
Post by: elagache on May 13, 2017, 11:19:51 PM
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

There hasn't been a photo posted in this thread in about 2 months, so the time has come.  May just isn't the time for ominous sunrises in California, but fair weather provides other photogenic sky scenes if you are paying attention.  We have a dry trough of low pressure and that is producing some puffy fair weather clouds like this:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-cwLpWmB/0/456c10e7/XL/Fair%20weather%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20in%20the%20PM-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-cwLpWmB/A)

I thought the contrast between the clouds, the blue sky and the very "young" green leaves of our Locust tree produced a pleasant effect.

So that should be proof enough that you can capture the moods of the sky around your weather instruments without having get up before the crack of dawn, be outside in the freezing cold, or get your camera (or you) all wet!

So who is going to get their camera out and show their stuff! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/camera_emoticon-1.jpg)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Hi Weathercats,
Twelve days ago my Canon webcam took this photo of the striking evening view. It may not look like May 2 but it was. My PWS is barely visible at the bottom. This spring has offered a lot of unusual temperatures. March was very warm, which caused many plants to blossom 3 weeks early. Afterwards April gave Switzerland some very erratic and low temperatures as the attachment indicates. As a result many fruit crops were wiped out. Vineyards were especially hard hit, with some farmers losing the entire crop.
Hope all is well, Irving

Yes indeed, it is a very dramatic scene and your PWS is truly visible!  Thanks for sharing!  :)

Sorry to hear about the difficult weather conditions that Swiss farmer are encountering.  It does seem that weather has become more variable and swings in between greater extremes.  The transition from the wet to dry season was very fast in California and everything had dried out in just the space of weeks.

Please continue to share with us these beautiful images from your webcam!

Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs, . . . .

This thread has been languishing for a few months so I've been hoping to find something to contribute.  We are expecting an unusually strong front to pass to our North which will cool things down.  It also brought some high clouds:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-6p58WLt/0/38008080/XL/High%20clouds%20behind%20anemometer%20in%20afternoon-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-6p58WLt/A)

Nothing too fancy, but enough to remind you'all to keep your camera handy when you are checking on your weather instruments!

P.S. Yeah, I know.  A bit of polarizer over-kill, but that adds just that extra bit of mellerdrama!  [biggrin]
Title: Cloud band from Lidia . . . (Re: Moods of the sky . . . 2016-17)
Post by: elagache on September 08, 2017, 12:12:28 AM
Dear WeatherCat shutterbugs,

We are having some unusually cool weather after all the heat of this summer.  The remnants of hurricane Lidia in the Eastern Pacific interacted with the low pressure from the North to make it feel like late Autumn instead of Summer.  It also brought us some clouds that were somewhat photogenic:

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-LdJXnX6/0/a954d09d/XL/Colorful%20cloud%20band%20at%20dusk%20behind%20anemometer-XL.jpg) (https://canebas.smugmug.com/Nature/Weather/2016-17-Weather-around-station/i-LdJXnX6/A)

Nothing all that exciting, but that's about as pretty the cloud formations get until we arrive close to Winter and we start to get those fiery sunrises.

Cheers, Edouard

P.S.  So you think you can take a better picture than that?  So what are you waiting for!  Pick up your camera and get to it!

P.P.S. That's especially true for those of you where Winter is so cold that going outside to photograph your weather station is basically unthinkable!

Dear Blick and WeatherCat victims of West Coast Summer conditions,

The mountain is ensconced in smoke from two forest fires that have us sandwiched in. Both fires started by lightening strikes - one is 44% contained after two weeks and the other is 5% contained after two days. Scary stuff.

My sympathies.  Thus far there hasn't been any fires nearby since the one next to a local high school.  However, California is burning from top to bottom.  The state has a website with all the gory details:

http://www.fire.ca.gov/current_incidents (http://www.fire.ca.gov/current_incidents)

Here is a link to current status of California's wildfires has generated by Google maps:

Wildfires don't cause as widespread damage as hurricanes, but the destruction they do cause is usually total.

Oh well, . . . . . Edouard
