Hiya from Rhode Island
« on: February 28, 2016, 04:10:12 PM »
Greetings!  I've been collecting data since 2008, when I installed my OS WMR968.
I was using Weather Display on a dedicated Windoze server.  I am a long time Mac user, but at the time, it was the only viable option.  In 2014, I decided to switch to WeatherCat and things were going nicely until last February.  We were hit with a terrible winter and our house suffered immense water damage from ice dams.  About 80% of the house had to be gutted to the studs to remove any moisture and mold.  We ended up in a hotel for 5 long months.
Needless to say, my weather station lost all that data during that period.  We finally moved back in in November.  I have brought my station back online, however the anemometer went belly up.  I had already replaced that once before.
Last week I decided to order the Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus.  It is due to be delivered tomorrow.  So, I will be switching over as soon as my logger arrives.  Rather than using Weatherlink, I purchased a USB logger via the http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=25564.0 thread and I'm not sure how long it will take to arrive.

I am curious if others have used a 3rd party logger with their setup.

Regards!
Traj

I can't help with your question, but I'm sure happy to see that you are back in a familiar house! I can sympathize. some 30 years ago we had solar heated hot water tank installed through the local power company. Unfortunately, they did not completely cover the added water lines in the attic. Came home after the several day Christmas visits to find water pouring out the front door! I think the only good part was that they reduced our water bill...  [rolleyes2]  [cheer]

Hopefully, one of the friendly members will be along to help with info about the logger.

In the meantime:Welcome AboaRd, Traj! I hope that screen name is an indication of your ability to laugh at the circumstances dealt you by last Winter's snow! [tup]

Welcome to the forum, Traj! Sorry to hear about the water, gutting, and remodel, but glad to hear you are getting a new (very nice) station!

Dear Traj, X-Air, dfw, and WeatherCat welcome wagon . . .

Welcome Traj to the WeatherCat forum!

We were hit with a terrible winter and our house suffered immense water damage from ice dams.

So sorry to hear that!  Glad you have managed to get through that ordeal though.

Greetings!  I've been collecting data since 2008, when I installed my OS WMR968.

. . .
I have brought my station back online, however the anemometer went belly up.  I had already replaced that once before.

Well it is any comfort I also started out with an Oregon Scientific WMR968.  However, I gave up on it after the anemometer died after just a year.  Sounds like you had better luck with that product.

Last week I decided to order the Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus.  It is due to be delivered tomorrow.

A lot of us have Davis Vantage Pro-2 stations.  They aren't indestructible, but they are very tough.

So, I will be switching over as soon as my logger arrives.  Rather than using Weatherlink, I purchased a USB logger via the http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=25564.0 thread and I'm not sure how long it will take to arrive.

I don't believe anyone on this forum is using the 3rd party data loggers.  Most of us set up our station before finding out about it.  I think your best bet is to keep an eye on the reports on WXForum.  That forum has enough numbers that you'll see how people have done with these 3rd party loggers.

The only downside of the third party loggers is that they aren't really loggers if I recall correctly.  There isn't any storage on them - am I correct?  It isn't a big deal if you plan to run WeatherCat 24/7, but if you have a mishap it means you have some time before you really start to lose data.  If you are curious, we have a table of how long a Davis data logger can go without connecting to WeatherCat and still not lose any data.  It is on the WeatherCat Wiki:

http://wiki.trixology.com/index.php/Capacity_of_the_Davis_data-logger_to_store_weather_data_depending_on_the_chosen_sampling_interval

Best of luck with the station changeover and once more welcome to the WeatherCat forum!

Cheers, Edouard [cheers1]

Traj:

Welcome to the WeatherCat forum and congratulations on your new Davis weather station. It is a nice upgrade from your previous hardware. Let us know how the data logger works for you. I see that it has 1M of memory storage. Much better price than the Davis logger.

Thank you for all your words of welcome.  My shipment is due by the end of the day, so I will likely start the transition tomorrow morning.  I'll keep both going until the logger arrives (no tracking on that).  Then I'll make the switch online.  I will also post what/if any problems I have doing so.

Thank you.  It is actually a Red Tailed Hawk that frequents my back yard.  It's not easy to identify from the banner.

That Red Tailed Hawk picture is nice horizontal so could be easily added to the left side of the header on your site, as some of the users and myself have done.

Ha ha, My mistake. I did the best I could, viewing from more than 2,100 miles from New Jersey. That is a wonderful capture of that bird in flight.

By the way, ice dams are a serious problem here too. Sorry for your inconvenience but glad you are back in your home.

We installed heat mesh under our shingles to melt the final four (4) feet of snow and ice at the edge of our roof. It has performed very well for the past 6 years. Prior to that we tried heat tape, shoveling the roof, ice melt products and pounding on the ice dams to break them up. All of these methods were either ineffective or highly dangerous.

How did you address potential ice dams in the rebuild of your home?

I think the cheapest and easiest solution is to move about 653.7 miles South... [sun3] That's my plan, as soon as our GrandDaughters move out of the house...

Fortunately we were well covered by our homeowners insurance.  The roof was replaced properly and the insulation was sprayed for the roof.  We shouldn't have to deal with that problem again.  I noticed a big difference this winter.  No heat escapes to melt the snow.
FYI, we had MetLife for insurance.  They couldn't have been nicer.  Not only paid everything (less $500 deductible) for the repairs, but also the hotel bill for 5 months.  Plus we got to accrue points for the hotel stay which we will be using this year for our vacations.   ;D

Thanks for the offer.  Perhaps if you could steer me to the file to edit, I may place something else in that area.

You are using as header     weather??/wsHeader1.php
I attach a less recent but still perfectly working version in which you can change the link to an image on line 22.
This version of that header script  is used most often to get an image inside the header.
Do not forget to first duplicate/backup your current version of wsHeader1.php .

Success, Wim
