Smooth change as always and purring along nicely! Been awarded goldstar status on Wunderground for which you as the Weathercat developer should also take credit!

Maybe I am being a bit dum here, but how do you install the upgrade. I have an unzipped folder in my downloads folder - but what do you do with it then? I don't want to lose any existing data! Any help appreciated!

Regards, John.

1. Close down the WeatherCat program.
2. Drag the WeatherCat application from the WeatherCat folder you just downloaded to the place where your WeatherCat program currently resides (usually your 'Applications' folder).
3. A pop-up will advise you that a file of that name already exists and you will be asked if you want to replace it. You should confirm this.
4. Re-start WeatherCat and you should have the new version.

ALAN.

Just a cautious addition/change to the above steps. ;)

After you Quit WeatherCat in step 1, drag the app to your Desktop or any other location (except the Trash) outside it's current location/folder. This way, you will still have the working app in the very rare change that the new app is somehow corrupt (from the download?). This will also allow you to skip step 2 and 3, as there will be no conflict to warn about. ;)

The point is, the WC app does not store your data in itself. All that data is in various files in your user/Library and the app's plist files. That's why it is safe/normal to simply replace the app with the new version. I simply use this procedure for any important app I update. Actually, I compress the old version and keep it until I have proven, to myself, that the new one is purrfect! With WC, this is being overly cautious, you've probably seen the very large number (198?) of updates/testing with the app's development. Still, as they say, "If you don't plan, you plan to fail!".  [banghead]

As always, a good tip is to take a look at the WeatherCat Wiki, in this case:

Sorted folks. It appears the problem lay with my version of Winzip - which wouldn't work. However, the built in Apple unzip utility did the trick. Working fine now. Thanks everyone anyway for your help!

Today I got some monthly records - but no record eMail. I never ever received such an eMail, so I thought it is time to ask...  :-[ What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,

UPDATE: Received a monthly record eMail about a new monthly wind gust record. Seems to work. Detected a (cosmetic) spelling error in my translation, Stu. If for what reason ever you do an Update to 2.4.1 let me know, I will send you the (updated german) strings file.

Just let me go back to the monthly record eMails:

I think, I got it now.  ::)  :-[
I misinterpreted the sentence
Quote
- these are emails that are specific to the current month -
as I thought it will report records for the current September (for example). But it reports records for all current months (in this case all Septembers) I have collected since running WeatherCat, correct?

So I received no monthly record eMail the whole August because there was no record broken during the current August in comparison to all other Augusts...   [banghead]

Cheers,

Computer Up-Time: 34 days, 20 hrs, 17 mins
Software Up-Time: 34 days, 20 hrs, 14 mins

I guess it's time to shut down, install and get going on Stu's latest work! [woohoo]

Restarted WC only, no OS restart. Not sure about Sylvester, I think it requires a Quitting and Restart of WC. I never visit Twit, so this may be a good time to see if it's worth the bandwidth to keep posting there. [rolleyes2] Unheeded advice to Gen. Custer, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!" Console (Applications->Console.app) logs might help pin point the problem. They might point out Internet connection problems or specific messages from WC. Might help to know how many and which apps are usually running when this happens.
Title: WeatherCat not yet certified for Sierra (Re: WeatherCat Version 2.4.0)
Post by: elagache on September 12, 2016, 11:30:30 PM
Dear Paul, X-Air, and WeatherCat early adopters,

I am receiving several of these notifications each day:

WeatherCat watchdog: WeatherCat appears to have hung; rebooting as a precautionary measure.
WeatherCat TimeStamp: 08:59:52 12-Sep-16

. . . . .

Eventually it starts reporting again. Any comments that might help resolve this? Running 2.4 on MacOS Sierra GM.

Unfortunately, you have jumped the gun to run WeatherCat on an new version of the OS without checking with Stu to see if WeatherCat is ready to "fly" on that OS.

We have another report of WeatherCat running into trouble on Sierra:

http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=2209.msg21716#msg21716 (http://athena.trixology.com/index.php?topic=2209.msg21716#msg21716)

Stu hasn't told us anything about WeatherCat's compatibility.  My guess is that there are some "issuez."  If at all possible, you would be better off to roll-back to an earlier version of OS X.

Sorry, Edouard

Correct. So if you have many years of data, these are going to be rare (but possibly a cause for celebration :) )

Is this tested with Sierra?  WC has stopped reporting to Weather Underground every day since installing Sierra.  Very frustrating, but I'm sure glad they send an email when they don't hear from my station.

PS - Could you put the emotions below the text window?

Is this tested with Sierra?

A bit more in the following thread although most have been following Stu's advice to hold off until the first dot-one update hits the streets. But since he didn't have any specific problem areas to report despite having had the developer versions far longer than most of us, I decided to give it a whirl on a backup machine.

And found no problems which hadn't already been reported as part of El Capitan feedback. Note though, I use WeatherLink IP which avoids that pesky USB to serial driver problem which bedevils many when the OS changes.

Sierra is now on my primary weather-reporting machine.

As an FYI, it also refuses to quit.  Even Force Quit; it will start up again and again and again.  So I have to reboot, and it starts up again.  If I tell an app to quit, it should not exhibit this behavior.  I've had this problem for years.  So far today,  it's quit reporting 3 times [as mentioned in my other email].

Hi Vicci,
Check the machine is not set to go to sleep - there have been reports of machines upgraded to 10.12 being set to go to sleep (even though they were set not to sleep before the upgrade).

If that isn't the problem, please start a new thread and post more details about what you're seeing.

With regards to WeatherCat re-launching itself, there is a watchdog which will reboot it if it abnormally terminates (or become inactive for more than half an hour) - this will restart it if you force quit it. You can check this setting in the preferences under the 'Units/Misc 1' pane of the preferences - 'Monitor & Relaunch WeatherCat'.

Interesting.  It was set to "put hard disks to sleep when possible" and Computer sleep was set to 15 minutes.  I unchecked the first thing, but am thinking I need to keep computer sleep set vs. hard disks.

Vicci  --- Thank you!

Vicci, you'll need to set the machine so it doesn't sleep. Letting the display sleep is fine. See the FAQ in the back of the WeatherCat manual for more details.
