Title: Harvey (and it ain't no rabbit)
Post by: TechnoMonkey on August 24, 2017, 07:39:06 AM
Looks like Harvey is making a beeline for me.  Got a high pressure system in Nevada and a low pressure system in Florida.  Hopefully that combo will deflect Harvey to a more northerly landfall.

Saw that in the paper this morning (still catching up on the news after the travels due to the eclipse!). I opened this forum today intending to find the Weather Cater in "Aransas, TX"! I guess you're ahead of me in the "news" department! cmu:-) [goofy] Hope you've got time to get the furniture up on boxes! :o Hope the area can cope with the rain which will probably be worse than the wind.

Just be safe! And maybe bring in the Wx station?!

Nope.  Gonna let the station ride it out. I have another.  (it's a $40 WS-2316)  We live in a wooded section an we are on the crest of the peninsula, so all should be good.  Thanks

Sounds like the latest forecasts are adding much stronger winds to the mix while saying the storm may stall it's northern movement and just 'inspect' the whole coast! Time to hire some new weathermen!!

The weather, including hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes and HUMIDITY drove us out of Texas after 30 wonderful years in the Lone Star State. Best of luck to all y'all in the path of Harvey (dumb name for a hurricane).

Just now getting hit by the first band of rain.

This map doesn't look good for getting the 'rabbit' moving to the east. Thanks to the massive High pressure ridge to the north and east of you. Maybe the puny one to your northwest will drop south and grow. Hang in there. Let us know if you lose Internet... oh, wait... [banghead]

Hope the 'monkey' made it through the hurricane OK. The storm became much stronger much faster than predicted. Worse, the rain may continue for several days.

I'm assuming his electric is out. Hoping for the best!

Two of our children live in Houston. Both reported lots of rain overnight (more than 5 inches (~13 cm) with an additional 40-50 inches (102-127 cm) forecast over the next few days. That is a devastating amount of rain, but the electric mains are still on this morning. Way too early to know how this is going to turn out.

Hard to believe t'Harvey' is still centered about half way between Victoria and San Antonio. That puts the whole eastern part of Texas (Lufkin to College Station south to the coast) in the northerly part of the storm sucking in moisture from the Gulf. The high pressure ridge, from Colorado up through Canada, even to their Pacific coast, simply seems stuck in the Rockies. [banghead] Only good news is that Corpus Christie/Aransas area is now out of the rains, hopefully allowing repairs to the severely damaged infrastructure.

Looking at the radar as it moves inland, definitely heading eventually toward Oklahoma.   It would be great if it would move higher and get into the weather pattern that controls Iowa, but I am afraid it will head southerly into Missouri and points eastward that already have had a lot of rain.

It is dry here in Iowa.  Most of the rain is either far North or South,   Definitely could use the moisture here.

Here is the 3 day forecast

I like the consolidated radar map from Wunderground, with animation ON. While it does not show actual cloud cover, it does provide a good indication of where rain (as well as thunderstorms) are. The current map (Centered on San Antonio (https://www.wunderground.com/weather-radar/united-states-regional/tx/san-antonio/animated?MR=1)) shows the center of rotation finally moving east. While there is some minor activity near Little Rock, I think the forecasters are getting pretty close to their initial path projections, they just really missed the strength increase. My wife and some friends are probably going to be upset when they get to FL next Friday, however!

Title: TechnoMonkey's station still down (Re: Harvey (and it ain't no rabbit))
Post by: elagache on August 27, 2017, 11:43:13 PM
Dear Steve, Blick, X-Air, Weatheraardvark, and members of WeatherCat community,

I'm assuming his electric is out. Hoping for the best!

TechnoMonkey's station is still down for the count.  Here is the link so you can monitor it for yourself:

https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KTXARANS6 (https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KTXARANS6)

This was an old La Crosse WS-2315, so it is certainly possible that only the station failed during the storm.  I'll feel better though when TechnoMonkey finally is able to get back on the forum.

Oh well, . . . . . . Edouard

Reports I heard noted that the electricity was out not only due to downed lines but due to downed poles! [banghead] That kind of damage really slows down recovery efforts... assuming roads become usable again.

He lives in Port Aransas, which was hit hard and heavy. Many buildings flattened, roofs gone, catastrophic destruction. Power lines indeed down and might be for weeks/months. Sure hoping to hear from him. Our kids lives in Houston where there is much less wind damage but serious flooding. They are both safe and dry, so far, but it's still coming down and no end to it yet in the forecast. Mother Nature is furious.

High ridge pressure now from Canada to Mexico in central US. Hoping Harvey will now get a kick-in-the-rear and start moving east a bit faster.

Alive and well. House survived, but trees and shingles did not. No power yet. Probably a week or so out. Minimal Internet and phone.

We got hit by the west and south wall. Hearsay is the edge of the eye was 100 feet north of us.

I WILL NEVER EVER ride out another.

Minimal Internet and phone.
Maximum thanks from here that you've survived! Thanks for letting us know! Enjoy the lack of SPAM! [lol]

Hopefully the storm surge had minimal effect on your house. Assuming you still got water damage from loss of shingles?

So glad to hear from you and that you are safe! I lived in Houston for 30 years. I evacuated for Katrina but sat out the rest. The evacuation took 13 hours to drive to Dallas. Had to go up the back roads so I could find gas. Still better than sitting in your house waiting to be killed. Again, what a blessing that you are safe and still have a house.

Our two children that live in Houston came though blessed as well. So many around them were flooded. Both of their homes are high enough that water never came inside, although it came close. One son will need a new roof. The other one said his biggest problem was underestimating how quickly the Peanut M&Ms would go. They have been helping people who were less fortunate muck out for 4 days now.

Very inspiring to see people pull together to help people.

It will be nice to get your station back online. Best of luck!

Dear TechnoMonkey, X-Air, Blick, and WeatherCat faithful,

I'm sure glad to see you made it one piece and managed to get back the forum!  :)

Alive and well. House survived, but trees and shingles did not. No power yet. Probably a week or so out. Minimal Internet and phone.

You have plenty of things to do, but when you get a chance - what happened to your weather station?

Cheers, Edouard

The 6 inch light pole, to which it was mounted, snapped. The wind and rain broke when the pole went down. Got spare equipment, but still waiting on power and Internet. All I have is generator and smart phone for now.  And smartphone service is intermittent at best.

I ran on generator power for 2 weeks after Katrina. Miserable in the heat. Hang in there.

Dear TechnoMonkey, Blick and WeatherCat station caregivers,

The 6 inch light pole, to which it was mounted, snapped. The wind and rain broke when the pole went down.

I didn't think it could have survived that sort of a storm but I was curious to know what happened.

Got spare equipment, but still waiting on power and Internet.

I'm glad you have replacement parts for your station since I assume it has been long discontinued.

All I have is generator and smart phone for now.  And smartphone service is intermittent at best.

Hang in there!  Surely the worst has passed and you'll be able to soon put your life back together again!

Cheers, Edouard
