I watched it live on my Apple TV.

Mavericks is a stupid name for an OS. No one outside of California will get it...

Mac Pro = I want one!! Not available until fall, and ALL boards, drives, etc, will have to be in external enclosures. Inside will be nothing more than the CPU, RAM, Graphics cards, and flash memory. So any PCI cards, optical drives, hard drives will be additional. Sounds like it could get pricey in a hurry.

Mac Pro = fail.  :-\ I think its the wrong way - smaller, lighter, thinner. As desktop I do want a computer with the chance to change things inside (for example add hard drives). Apple is redefining cable chaos on the desktop: Up to 36 external devices??? Shurely looks pretty nice...  ???

Cheers,
Reinhard

I believe it has to do with Apple's endorsement of Intel processors and networking (Thunderbolt 2). These two together mean that internal devices are no longer necessary to achieve the data speeds of today. And that also allows more freedom for anything you want connected. If everything is external, then the only thing left is a bank of CPUs, and believe me, professionals love and will pay for raw blazing CPU power, especially if it connects to multiple montors.

Marry the power tower with nice design, and you have another winner. It will be interesting to see if Apple can make professionals interested in the new design. There has to be some "more" advancements to justify the price tag.

By the way, cooling is a major issue with big multiple-CPU core machines. The Hazwell chips use 25% less power, and the new design looks very efficient at cooling. It's interesting that the form factor looks like an old time kerosene heater, but maybe that's what it takes to keep it cool and quite.
