La Crosse WS-2315
« on: January 27, 2017, 03:36:48 PM »
Through a plethora of circumstances and incidents, I now have a connector in one hand and a cable in the other.  I have been unsuccessful in reattaching same.

Can anyone give me the pinout for the serial cable on the WS-2315?

Maybe something like this: LaCrosse 23xx Cable Pinout The page also has a link to "LaCrosse Weather station manuals" (PDF's). Hope this helps. Be more careful the next time you  encounter "a plethora of circumstances and incidents"!!  [banghead] :o :(

I tried that and it did not work.  I ohmed the cable and tried it on a windoze machine with heavy weather and a different console.  I tried reversing the order of the connections as the description was ambiguous as to the modular connector reference point.  Just not having any luck.  One would think four wires would not be such an issue, especially considering I used to repair electronics for a living.

But, there are only 16 possible combinations... wait, are there 9 pins and 4 wires?! That would mean 36 combinations?  cmu:-) Oh well, patience, perseverance, and checking other possibilities? I'd suggest a chart of 36 combinations... although the instructions do narrow down some connections: "So Blue -> Pin 7, Brown -> Pin 2" However, the diagram would be more helpful if the pin numbers were indicated, not to mention the colors "Blue" and "Brown" actually used.  [goofy] "B" appears to be Black, not "Blue" nor "Brown".  [rolleyes2] Does "La Cross" not have a contact/support/help phone? [banghead]

Looking at that page again, it appears to be offering "instructions" for both an RJ11 and a DB-9 (?) connector, so you may have 'only 16 possible combinations! [rockon] ThU5:-)

The DB9 is molded therefore there are only 16 possibilities. I was hoping someone with a WS-2315 or WS-2316 could hold their connector with the wire hanging, the clip in the back and read off the colors from left to right.

Hi Techno,
My old LC 2317 plug I have looked at and photographed. I hope I have attached the correct photo. Not able to see it in the preview for some reason???. Looking at at the wires straight on from the PC Com port where it plugs in, with hook on top, from left to right, orange, black, red, white. Looking down towards hook would be L to R, white, red, black, orange.  This means the white wire would be towards the outside of the unit when plugged in. Got it? ha ha.
Hope this helps,
Irving

If I understand things correctly (often a big problem for me!), the cable you need has a female RJ-11 connector on one end and a DB-9 on the other? Even if I have the details wrong, I'm just wondering if it is possible to simply buy a replacement cable. Of course, that is probably antithetical to a person who can build those things blindfolded! [banghead]

Sometimes it's just faster to buy the third-world, factory made components than to re-invent the wheel! I did something like that with a micro-wave oven at our house. The door's interlocking switches got out of sync after I tried correcting them. I let the 'experts' remove the case and set things strait. No parts need replacing, but the time and fix was beyond my grade level. Frankly, I think the manufacturer worked with repair companies to design something that could keep them both in business! [lol2]

Had a look on the Lacrosse website. There is a possibility of sending a support request but I am not able to do it being outside of the US and Canada. Here is the website.

Here is a website that discusses the pin wiring you are looking for.

Regarding the pin wiring on the other end, it is with some sense of accomplishment I can report these results of my trusty multimeter: 2-black, 3-red, 4-white and 7-orange. This is for my WS2317.
Regards, Irving

It's been a while, but I finally got everything hooked back  [woohoo]  It turns out that the molded connector was bad without showing up on a standard voltmeter.  I still have no idea what was wrong with the cable.  I just replaced the whole thing with spare parts.  New one works, old one does not.  Both check identical with each other.  Go figure.

Dear TechnoMonkey and WeatherCat station maintainers,

It's been a while, but I finally got everything hooked back  [woohoo]  It turns out that the molded connector was bad without showing up on a standard voltmeter.  I still have no idea what was wrong with the cable.  I just replaced the whole thing with spare parts.  New one works, old one does not.  Both check identical with each other.  Go figure.

I'm glad you were able to get your station back up and running.  Agreed it is strange that one cable didn't work even if it appears to be carrying current.  Perhaps the molded connector was sufficiently out of shape that the connection wasn't being made.

As you say - as long as it is a happy ending!

Cheers, Edouard
