Title: Caravaning Across America
Post by: Steve on June 04, 2017, 03:28:17 PM
Stu, we are joining you in traveling by caravan! Last week we ordered one of these:

However, ours will only be for occasional use during our travels. We will still use motels for most of our nights. This is just for those times when we are deep in a national forest of national park and don't want to drive a couple hours back to a motel. Or for mild off-road outings with groups. It is only 5X8 feet, and just 44" inside height. It is low enough that we can put our kayaks on top, or use it as a utility trailer or moving van. I consider it a multi-use trailer. Deb just rolls her eyes...

And then, against 38,000:1 odds, a week later I won a free roof top tent for my 4Runner!

I think that's where I'll send Deb if she starts snoring in the trailer.  [bed] The trailer will be several months lead time, but I should receive the tent in the next couple of weeks. I look forward to trying both of them out on our travels!

With my 74 yo back aching from some heavy lifting I shouldn't have done yesterday, I'll just say good camping and congratulations! [rolleyes2] cmu:-) Also hoping your wife doesn't read these forums... if she does, you may also need to carry a 'dog house'!

The RTT comes with a 3" memory foam mattress, and the trailer fits a queen size. Most folks put a 4-6" queen memory foam in them, and say they are as comfortable as at home.

Dear Steve, X-Air, and WeatherCat caravan fans,

Stu, we are joining you in traveling by caravan! Last week we ordered one of these:

Congratulations!  I have always had a soft spot for teardrop styled trailers.  My first introduction to vintage trailers was at a teardrop trailer rally.  For many years I subscribed to this newsletter:

http://www.teardrops.net/ (http://www.teardrops.net/)

What brand and model is your tiny trailer?

However, ours will only be for occasional use during our travels. We will still use motels for most of our nights.

These are very small trailers!  I don't think camping in these things is easy to take for very long.  Does it have an external galley?

And then, against 38,000:1 odds, a week later I won a free roof top tent for my 4Runner!

Congratulations2!!

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

I'm not sure, but I think it's made by either All-Clad (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-Clad) or Cuisinart (http://www.cuisinart.com/products/cookware/chefs_classic_stainless.html). I think you also need one of these (https://www.amazon.com/Shoe-Horn-Pro-Comfort-Collapsible/dp/B00CGK5GWE?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-osx-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00CGK5GWE)...

It is made by Hiker Trailers and is the 5X8 Deluxe, with factories in Denver and just north of Indianapolis. So it will be a reasonably short drive to pick it up.

I've tent camped in a one-man backpack tent for several weeks on end, and one of these would have been a welcome luxury! Queen size bed, no rocks or roots, and no setup/takedown would be wonderful. There are folks on the Hiker Trailer site that travel for months at a time in them, sometimes two adults and a couple of dogs.

It does have a large rear door and shelving for a galley. I opted for a more basic model so that I can configure the shelving and space how I want rather than the full already built galley like some makes offer. They are vertical shelves, not the tiered shelving like a true teardrop.

Way to go Steve! Great adventures coming up, whether in the trailer or lying atop the 4-Runner. Ha ha ha. Enjoy.

Dear X-Air, Steve, Blick and WeatherCat fans of caravans, . . . .

It is made by Hiker Trailers and is the 5X8 Deluxe, with factories in Denver and just north of Indianapolis. So it will be a reasonably short drive to pick it up.

Here is the main website:

http://hikertrailer.net/ (http://hikertrailer.net/)

Here is the webpage with the model that Steve has purchased:

http://hikertrailer.net/our-models/5ft-x-8ft-trailers/5x8-deluxe/ (http://hikertrailer.net/our-models/5ft-x-8ft-trailers/5x8-deluxe/)

So now we can all join in with a little drooling . . . . . (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/drool-smile.gif)

I've tent camped in a one-man backpack tent for several weeks on end, and one of these would have been a welcome luxury!

Point well taken!

It does have a large rear door and shelving for a galley. I opted for a more basic model so that I can configure the shelving and space how I want rather than the full already built galley like some makes offer. They are vertical shelves, not the tiered shelving like a true teardrop.

Okay I see the difference.  The teardrops are more elegant, but they don't provide nearly as much space.  This looks like an interesting variation on the design.  I wasn't aware of Hiker Trailer.  I've added it to my bookmarks - you can never have too many bookmarks related to caravans!  [biggrin]

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Dear Steve, Blick, and WeatherCat "caravan" fans,

We picked up our Hiker Trailer today!

 [wink] . . . . Yuck!  Why that thing would never look good behind a 1965 Buick Special wagon! . . . . . . . .   lol(1)

However, it looks absolutely splendid behind your SUV!  [tup]  Nice choice Steve!

Next step is outfitting it with all the goodies needed for a night in the wilderness!

Please so share pictures of how you setup your caravan!

Post by: elagache on May 09, 2018, 11:18:21 PM
Dear Steve, Weatheraardvark, and WeatherCat fans of road trips!

Our first weekend in the Hiker!

Congrats!  You have done a great job of configuring tents to give the two of you enough space!  [tup]  As long as the weather isn't too harsh, it should be a really lovely way to explore the country.

However, just in case you want to trade-up (and more likely for the rest of the WeatherCat curious,) I just came across yet another design for a compact travel trailer - Happier Camper:

https://happiercamper.com/ (https://happiercamper.com/)

Here is a picture from their website (sorry a bit big for most browsers:)

There is a video on Vimeo showing this trailer:

https://vimeo.com/221023512 (https://vimeo.com/221023512)

There is also one for sale on eBay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Happier-Camper-HC1-Lightweight-Retro-styling-with-modern-technology/142786950429 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Happier-Camper-HC1-Lightweight-Retro-styling-with-modern-technology/142786950429)

I still can't be deflected from my dream of a vintage Airstream, but this trailer is really cute!

You can actually adjust the size of an image with Preview, if you don't have access to a free image editor. I don't think you can crop it, but you can certainly avoid the infamous horizontal scrolling problem for those using a mobile device or not using less than a monitor size window. Another forum I visit actually presents only a reduced size 'preview' of any image, no matter how small it might be. Then, if the user wants to view it, they simply click the preview and the browser opens a full-size additional page, even if it is as big as you monitor, no scrolling of any kind! ThU5:-) This also avoids having the text in a post slide out of view when one scrolls to the right for a huge image. Plus, the page should load faster since it doesn't have to download the full-sized image. On the "downside" it requires an additional click...  [rolleyes2]

Dear DFW, X-Air, and WeatherCat road-trip wannabees,

Sorry for the late reply, but this looks awesome! The key ingredient for me is this little guy here:

Never quibble about a functional solution, but my heart still yearns for something a tad more romantic like say this sort of a rig:

http://www.airstreamclassifieds.com/ads/1973-airstream-safari-23-utah-3/ (http://www.airstreamclassifieds.com/ads/1973-airstream-safari-23-utah-3/)
(http://www.airstreamclassifieds.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/157268.jpg) (http://www.airstreamclassifieds.com/ads/1973-airstream-safari-23-utah-3/)

The number of choices if you want something nostalgic but still modern is definitely growing.  I recently discovered Casita Travel Trailers:

https://casitatraveltrailers.com/ (https://casitatraveltrailers.com/)

(https://casitatraveltrailers.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/TrailerPics-Spirit-00.jpg) (https://casitatraveltrailers.com/)

They are a bit on the small size, but they are really cute and functional.  It doesn't scratch the vintage trailer itch.  On the other hand, it sure is a lot more appealing than many of the boxy RVs that are out there, and it doesn't require a huge SUV or pickup to tow it.

Having more choices doesn't solve the problem of how to pay for one, but as always, window shopping is always free!  :)

Cheers, Edouard  [cheers1]

Dear Steve, Blick, DFW, and WeatherCat roadtrip fans,

Four years in, we just got back from four days in Hocking Hills State Park, in Ohio. Hot!!!! 84-88°F most of the day, with not much shade and high humidity.

Thanks for sharing!   Sounds like you had a very nice time!

Still, a bad day camping is better than a good day...oh, wait, I don't work. :)

Perhaps you should have put it this way: "A bad day camping with my squaredrop trailer (and A/C) is better than camping in a tent without any A/C!"   ;D

I see extension cords on the ground, did you have your air conditioner going?

Also, I finally ended up with some of those Costco solar landscape lights and they are very nice indeed!  Isn't that a solar landscape light in the extreme left of your second picture?  It sure looks like one of those Costco lights to me!

Thanks again for sharing Steve!   [bounce]

I see extension cords on the ground, did you have your air conditioner going?

Nights were in the low 70s to high 60s, so we didn't at first. There's a fan in the roof vent, and the windows open made for some air movement. We used a small 200W ceramic heater a few minutes here and there just to dry out the humid air getting sucked in. The last evening we did use the A/C. You can barely see it behind the potty tent. And external unit with collapsable hoses. It got too cold, really. That was the first time we used it other than in the driveway. Otherwise, we have camped fall or spring.

The extension cords go to the fridge in the back of the truck and the AC power to the trailer, which feeds a power strip for the above heater and Deb's knockoff Keurig, as well as the charging brick for our small Goal Zero, which in turn powers the DC fan and LED lights in the trailer as well as charges iDevices.

Also, I finally ended up with some of those Costco solar landscape lights and they are very nice indeed!  Isn't that a solar landscape light in the extreme left of your second picture?  It sure looks like one of those Costco lights to me!

Yes, it is! It puts out too much light for my liking, but Deb likes it, so...

This was a get together of owners of the Hiker trailers out of the Indianapolis builder (the other factory is in Denver.) There were 49 of us in sizes from 4X8 to the only 6.5X10 ever built. Majority are 5X8 like ours or 5X9, all with varying degrees of options and modifications. Ours was at the cheaper end of the range. Trailers in attendance cost from $3600 to $27,000!!  :o

That sure is a far cry from my days of camping in a tent!

Yes, it is! It puts out too much light for my liking, but Deb likes it, so...

I agree with you, those solar lights are too bright for a campground.  However, the idea of marking the edges of your campsite with a solar light is clever!

This was a get together of owners of the Hiker trailers out of the Indianapolis builder (the other factory is in Denver.) There were 49 of us in sizes from 4X8 to the only 6.5X10 ever built. It is neat that your trailer builder also has a reunion for their customers!  I'm sure the owners enjoy it and it is good publicity.  Yes, tiny trailers have started to get quite expensive for their size.  However, that shouldn't be so surprising.  The quality of the cabinet-work has been going upscale.  Also, they are being fitted with more and more of the appliances to be found in an RV.  Those costs remain roughly the same whether your trailer is 8 feet long or 24 feet long.

That's one of the reasons I'm still looking!!

Thanks for sharing Steve!

🎶 Movin’ on Up 🎶

Introducing "Curiosity", our 2023 Oliver Legacy Elite II Twin Bed version.

We took delivery at the factory in Hohenwald, Tennessee on March 29, and stayed two nights at their on-site campground, then two nights at David Crockett State Park in nearby Laurenceburg, Tennessee. We wanted to thoroughly test all the systems and make sure we understood how everything worked. Having never owned a trailer with plumbing, heat, air conditioning, water and waste tanks, or extensive electrical system, it was a steep learning curve.

Then we drove to Pine Mountain, Georgia to stay three nights in the lodge at Callaway Gardens, before taking a leisurely two day drive home. We took advantage of Cracker Barrel's overnight RV parking, and had a hearty breakfast.

We are extremely pleased with our new home on wheels! Quality, fit, finish are all exceptional. It is truly built like a high-end sailboat. The community support on the Oliver forum is a welcome change from the toxicity of Facebook Groups (my only personal use for FB.) Five nights in, and we are looking forward to many years of enjoyment.

With the Land Cruiser and the Oliver both under-the-radar luxury, I can't think of a better pairing.

But I thought "Curiosity" was on Mars?
Funny story;
We never name “things”. Our cat’s name was Cat… But a few weeks ago, Deb and I were watching a YouTube video of a couple our age who travel in a Sprinter van. During one scene of them turning onto a dirt road in Arizona, she said in an overdubbed narration, “Every one of our journeys begin with curiosity. What will we discover? What challenges might we encounter? What will be the lessons we learn?” I paused, replayed that scene, and paused again. Epiphany moment! I turned to Deb and asked how “Curiosity” sounds for a name, and she was all for it.

In looking for inspiration for graphics to place on the front of the trailer, I turned to Google images. One in particular popped out at me, and on a whim, I wrote to the company, Curiosity Software Ireland, asking permission to use it as the name for our new trailer, fully expecting the answer to be “No”. Instead, not only did they give permission, but enthusiastically so! They want to tell our story on their company blog and social media outlets!

Wild! Serendipity all around! We’re having graphics made now. Here’s a mockup.

In case you want to see how old Deb's gotten over the years (Although only John has actually met us.) Me? I'm still 40!

Thanks for sharing the video link.  There is no doubt that you have made a very good purchase and you and Deb will be enjoying Curiosity for a long time.  The only thing that surprised me is why the company didn't spice in some video of the trailer itself.  You made a point about the importance of the twin beds, that was certainly a good excuse to show that part of the trailer and obviously the company must have some stock footage of the interior for other promotional displays.

You certainly are tempting me to try to make some progress on my own plans, but for the moment, those plans will still have to wait.

Cheers, Edouard

  • Loved the video - thanks for sharing the link.
  • The graphic looks amazing. So very cool of Curiosity Software Ireland Ltd. to give you permission to use their logo.
  • Happy Camping!!
  • What did you do with your old trailer?

Thanks John! The Hiker will stay in the family. Our youngest daughter and her new husband want to use it. They are buying a 110 year old house, so can't buy the trailer now. So we'll do a lend/lease deal where they store it in exchange for using it until they can buy it.

We're heading to Alabama in the morning to a rally with 200 or so other Olive owners! Back in 10 days!!

Nice travel setup! Looks pretty comfortable. Hmm, is that the same car you have had? Time to upgrade the vehicle, perhaps?

I'll have to post some photos of our "rig" when we start our trip from the east coast to the west coast later this summer. Alas, we go budget, i.e. tent camping and hotels if the weather gets too bad. This adventure will include a few nights in Yellowstone National Park.

Thanks, and welcome back, Michael!

I may have still had the 2008 Subaru Outback when you were here. That was followed by a 2016 Toyota 4Runner, which we used to tow the Hiker squaredrop. Then in 2021, I snagged the last of the US bound V8 Toyota Land Cruisers. That’s what we’re using for the Oliver. I won’t be replacing either for another 20 years or so. 😁

Steve, thanks for the welcome! Good to be back following the channel. We usually hold on to our car for a long time as well. A few years ago we finally bought a new car - three weeks later a tree fell on it and totaled it. Fortunately, insurance covered the loss 100% and I was able to order another one which took three months to deliver.
