iTunes 12.7 and iOS
« on: September 14, 2017, 12:03:29 AM »
Overnight I was automatically "upgraded" by Apple to iTunes 12.7 without being granted a choice if I wanted to - it just happened. The new iTunes (preparatory for iOS 11) has removed the iOS App Store and all management of apps, as well as management of Ringtones and iTunes U, from iTunes. In the long run, I actually like this because iTunes became a bloated mess. But in the short run, the iOS app store and app management are gone from iTunes on your Mac, which takes some getting used to. They are now handled on your iOS device only. The App Store in iTunes is kaput and there?s nothing you can do about it, so dry your tears and move on as quickly as you are able.

This will become a major pain in the backside only if you ever have to restore your iPhone from a backup. I had to do it twice and it took a long time. Now it will take even longer and use your bandwidth. You can still backup and restore your iPhone through iTunes but apps will now be restored only wirelessly as a re-download from the Internet. If you have data caps on your Internet plan this could be a problem and you might have to got to McDonalds or the library to restore.

If you have custom ringtones, that you did not purchase from Apple, you should make a backup copy of the Tones folder in case it disappears in a future version of iTunes. You can find it at ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones.

This is all the good news I can share today.

Check your App Store Prefs (Actually the settings for the App Store in System Prefs). I allow Automatic checks for updates but only allow Installs of data and security updates. All other choices are Unchecked/disabled. Apple also makes it easy to select the 'wrong' choice when one gets the "Updates Available" Notification, in my humble opinion. [rolleyes2] [banghead]

I've yet to read about what the benefits are to customers with this change. I can only hope that there will be a change in the App Store that will have a sub-section for iDevice apps. Of course, with the iPhone being the major source of profits, the sub-section may end up being for Mac apps! [rolleyes2]

Not being "into" music, the only use I had for iTunes was for backups updating iDevices. That may be even more difficult with my 'old' iPad with only WIFI... " Data caps and bandwidth problems are, of course, of no concern for Apple. >:( Might even bee seen as a boost for their phone partners! I gotta go back inside, the black helicopters are coming!  :o

My solution for this is not to click on "Update" or "Remind me later" (I think it is called so in english) but instead click left from the two options into the banner, then the AppStore will open with the update-section and shows you what is willing to update.  :)

Exactly the correct translation! ThU32:-)

I keep clicking that option in hopes that Apple will learn I'm not interested! They seem to be harder to train than I am!!!  [banghead] [blush] [lol]

Dear Blick, X-Air and WeatherCat masters of "resistance" . . . .

Repeat after me, . . . . . Oh how I miss Steve Jobs! . . . .  :(

I agree that iTunes was an ugly mess, but this too was an example of poor planning.  iTunes is (note the name) about music.  Independent apps should have been created for videos, iOS management, etc.  This is another example of Apple being lazy and calling it innovation.

The App Store in iTunes is kaput and there?s nothing you can do about it, so dry your tears and move on as quickly as you are able.

Not so fast!  I haven't been subjected to this update and you might be able restore the previous version of your iTunes from backup.  I don't know how Apple pulled this update stunt on you, my Mac app store has told me there is an iTunes 12.7 to update to and I'm going to be very firm - request denied!!!!

All of a sudden, it is looking like upgrading to High Sierra won't be happening for me for a while.

Grumble, grumble, grumble, . . . . . .Edouard  >:(

Oh brother.   Then do not complain when the IOS or MACOSX  is being used by Apple, and things do not work.    I still can download via the app, app or store.  I have all my music there.     and if you ever do decide to update your stuff, you might find you have a lot of updates to do.

But then again, there is always windows and android out there.   I am letting apps update so they work on whatever Apple throws down, and no.. I am not getting anythingnew beyond the imac I have now.

Commentary and alternatives (Re: iTunes 12.7 and iOS)
« Reply #6 on: September 15, 2017, 10:28:20 PM »
Dear Weatheraardvark and WeatherCat folks struggling with the moves of Apple Computer,

MacinTouch has some commentary in the same general direction as my own.

https://www.macintouch.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=667&pid=24770#pid24770

So Apple is making some real Mac specialists extremely unhappy.  However, that MacinTouch thread mentions an interesting potential replacement for the lost iTunes funcationality: iMazing.

https://imazing.com/

Here is a review of this application on Macworld:

https://www.macworld.com/article/3196571/software/imazing-2-2-review-a-better-way-to-use-your-mac-to-manage-your-iphone-and-ipad.html

I'll need to look more into this, but perhaps other software developers will mange to fill the void that Apple has foolishly created.

Cheers, Edouard
