Title: WeatherCat for the Apple Watch
Post by: The Grand Poohbah on March 28, 2015, 01:46:48 AM
I am pleased to announce that WeatherCat is running on an Apple Watch. Not the real Apple Watch, mind you, but the Apple Watch Simulator.

The Apple Watch works as an extension of a paired iPhone. if you have the new WeatherCat on your iPhone, you can view weather data on your Apple Watch. Your displayed data comes from the first two rows on the iPhone WeatherCat*. The displayed watch weather data is updated in synchrony with the iPhone WeatherCat data even when you are using another app on your iPhone.

It's not pretty yet, but it works. I will have to wait until the Apple Watch is out before submitting the new version of WeatherCat for the iPhone. In the meanwhile, if you purchase an Apple Watch and would like to beta test the new app, send me your email address.

*Savvy iPhone WeatherCat users use the Edit function to arrange the rows in any order.

I must confess though that isn't the app that is going to get me to rush out and buy an Apple Watch, my old Casio is doing just fine . . . . .  [biggrin]

Are you kidding? Your Casio might track the time, but in no way can it tell you what's up with WeatherCat. I figure you for a $10,000 gold unit as soon as you sort your battery drain issue properly.

I am looking for more "WeatherCat for the Apple Watch" beta testers. We have been in beta on the actual Apple Watch device for some time. If any WeatherCat fans have purchased an Apple Watch and would like to comment on the beta version of WeatherCat for the Apple Watch, send me your email address. This is your big chance to show off your weather station on your Apple Watch.

Dear Grand and WeatherCat users who can tell the time, . . . .

Congratulations on the continued success on the project!  [tup]

Alas, even if my venerable Casio is down for the moment in need of a new battery, I have too many other "expensive hobbies"  (http://www.canebas.org/Automotive/V8_Buick/Misc/Biquette_V8_Buick_signature.gif) to indulge in an Apple Watch at this time.

OTOH, if some one will buy me a watch, I'll be happy to test the app. Probably still won't actually wear the "watch", however. [rolleyes2]

Dear Ktuley and WeatherCat welcoming committee,

I am looking for more "WeatherCat for the Apple Watch" beta testers. We have been in beta on the actual Apple Watch device for some time. . . .

First, let me welcome you to the WeatherCat forum! (http://www.canebas.org/WeatherCat/Forum_support_documents/Custom_emoticons/welcome_smiley.gif)

Alas, I cannot answer your question directly.  WeatherCat for the Apple watch hasn't made it to the offerings of Poobah Industries:

I suggest that you contact "Grand" directly and ask.  You can send him a Private Message from this page:

I had a "WeatherCat for the Apple Watch" working and being used by a WeatherCat enthusiast. Along comes Apple with an update to watchOS 2.0. This is not your simple tweak or two. It's a "forget everything that you did and do it the new way" re-write. Other projects have delayed the re-write. Since I've already forgotten everything I did and will have to learn how to do ti the new way anyway, it will probably be a while before it comes to fruition (again).

Thanks for asking.

WeatherCat for Apple Watch Redux (version 1.5) is ready for beta testing. Send me your email address if you want to try it. If you don't have an Apple Watch, send me your email anyway. I need the WeatherCat for iPhone portion tested too. The iPhone portion has the same features and interface as the store version (1.4), but the internals have changed to accommodate the Apple Watch. I've tested it and would like external verification. If it doesn't work for you, you can always delete this beta version of WeatherCat on your iPhone and reinstall the official release from the Apple iTunes Store.

An Apple Watch is not necessary. You can try WeatherCat for iPhone 1.5 Beta on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad. You do have one, don't you?

If anyone without an Apple Watch would like to try WeatherCat for iPhone 1.5 Beta, please send me your email. The iPhone part needs to be tested too.

Always wanted an Apple Watch, but couldn't justify buying one? Now you can. Monitor your weather station with a flick of your wrist.

Impress your friends. Dazzle your loved ones. Bore your enemies.

Here are a few screenshots from the Apple Watch:

A single swipe from the clock gives you a quick glance:

And you can scroll through all the weather data. Here are some examples:

There's more to come and I need your feedback. Send me your email address if you'd like to participate.

WeatherCat for the Apple Watch is a work in progress. Thought you might like to see a screenshot of the latest WeatherCat Apple Watch Glance screen:

A "Glance" is shown when you swipe up from the watch face. You choose what WeatherCat indicator you want to see in the Glance.

Got a notice that a new version was available, ran to the Flight Test app and it installed 1.5 (160626). Frankly don't know if that's actually the newest version, but that's what show in the iPhone/WeatherCat/Settings page.

For some unknown reason, I found that WiFi was turned OFF on my iPhone! I assumed that may have been the cause of my first un-responsiveness of the app. I actually did appear to be getting data from Stu's server. But could not get anything from my "Local" nor the "Hopefulhill" site.

After turning WiFi back on, I cannot get anything but the "Checking the connection..." message with any of the three sites selected. I'll try a reboot...

Update:
Using "Local":
The display shows a blank bar until under the "9" in the external temperature 89.2?F. The 'mini' bar, with a orange dot at the end stops just past the end of the text.
The blank bar is much shorter in the Internal temperature 79.0?F. It starts a bit farther along the 'bar' than the External one, but is barely long enough to show the orange dot.
Using Stu's server: No contact after 5 mins. I'll shut down WC and see if that helps...

OK, made contact. However, the mini bar starts under the "a" in temperature and runs to almost the end of the "u". The orange dot is in the approximate middle of the "bar". Is he orange dot supposed to indicate the current value while the length of the bar show the maximum? Is the length of the bar showing the range of values for X hours?
The mini bar for the Internal temp is not quite long enough to display the whole orange dot. No, wait, the whole dot is showing but the 'bar' starts to the right of the left edge of the dot by several pixels.

Using the hopefulhill server: waiting for contact, Scotty! We need more power, Zulu! [banghead]
OK, I'll use the Shutdown/Reopen app procedure...

That worked again. It seems the app can't "let go" of the current connection in order to try the new setting.

This time, the mini 'bar' is much longer, starts between the "a" and the "t" and runs past the end of the text. The orange dot is at the extreme right-hand end of the bar. Actually appears to extend a few pixels past the end of the bar.
The Internal temperature 'bar' is still quite short, it starts just before the value (75.9?F) with the orange dot directly below the "9", the 'bar' actually stops about half way into the dot.

Successfully returned to the "Local" service (without a restart). (http://i1327.photobucket.com/albums/u666/xAirbusDriver/thumbup_zpsfgqhxlem.gif)

It appears the "new iPhone graphics" are the new, shorter bars that must indicate a range of values for some time frame. I'm going to re-inable Relative pressure to see if the range is minimal...
Yep! I think I've figured out the bar length thing! [lol]

Successfully went back to Stu's server. Maybe hopefulhill server is simply down? NOPE! It's now connecting there, also!

I guess the new bits were just cold when they came down the interweb pipes, now that they've warmed up, they seem to be working correctly! [cheer]

Here is the new graphic in the WeatherCat 1.5 Beta that xairbusdriver is referring to:

The blue bar represents the range of minimum and maximum values since midnight.
The orange dot is the current actual value.
Tap the indicator to see a popup of minimum and maximum values.
Tap the min-max popup to make it go away.
The watch icon next to the date and time indicates that WeatherCat/iPhone is connected to WeatherCat/Watch.

That's about the gist of it.

I like it. Definitely some very nice features, like being able to see the min/max values. I am however (using the latest beta build from Testflight) struggling with connecting sometimes: e.g. when I try to use the 'Glance' functionality, it will give me a black screen with just the time in the upper right corner.
Have to fiddle with starting the app on my iPhone 6 and such to restore connectivity, bu then it will work fine.

Jos:

I too have connectivity issues sometimes. I have learned that if I just leave the app open it eventually connects just before the auto off feature of the iPhone kicks in. Once in a while the auto-off feature turns the display off before I connect. In those instances, I just re-open the WC app, go to settings and return to the main screen without making any changes and the app connects to WC server. This is frustrating, but still simpler than killing the app and changing the settings, etc. For me, it will eventually connect without me having to change anything.

The WatchOS awakens WeatherCat/Phone in the background for a brief period to get the update. Sometimes the communication between the iPhone and the WeatherCat Server takes longer than what WatchOS allowed. This causes the data update to fail and the Watch ends up with a blank screen. That's my theory.
Title: User's Guide to WeatherCat for the Apple Watch
Post by: The Grand Poohbah on July 27, 2016, 06:19:04 PM
WeatherCat for iPhone version 1.5 adds Apple Watch support.

The Apple Watch portion requires iOS 9.3 or higher on you iPhone and watchOS 2.2 or higher on your watch. Apple has already updated the respective OS's past this minimum requirements.

Verify Installation

Open WeatherCat for iPhone and verify that you can get a connection to your weather station.
Go to the "Apple Watch" app on your iPhone, scroll down and select WeatherCat.
Turn on "Show App on Apple Watch" and "Show in Glances".

Glance

Use Glance to get a snapshot of the current weather. Swipe up from the clock face and then across to find the WeatherCat Glance.
The time under "WeatherCat" at the top of the Glance is the time of the update. If it's gray, an update is in progress. If green, the update is done.
The 2 smaller numbers are the minimum and maximum values (when appropriate.)
If you tap the Glance, it will open the WeatherCat App. Use the App to select what you see in the Glance.

App

Use the WeatherCat App on the Apple Watch to see all the weather measurements and to select which measurement you see in the Glance.
If the screen is blank, raise your wrist to wake it. You can launch the App from the Home screen or by tapping the Glance.
The first time WeatherCat/Watch appears, it will be updated. Tap the center of the watch to request another update. Updates may take several seconds.
The 2 smaller numbers are the minimum and maximum values (when appropriate.)
The date at the bottom is the time of the last weather update. Gray means that an update is in progress. Green means an update was completed.

Select what measurement to see on your Apple Watch

Swipe the App display up and down to scroll through the measurements. You can also use the crown to scroll through the measurements.
Tap on the measurement to select it. The measurement you select is also the one that you will see in the Glance.
If an update occurs while you are scrolling, the list will immediately scroll to the last selected measurement. Tap a measurement to select it.

Use your iPhone to make changes on your Watch

The list of measurements on the Watch App corresponds to the list on your iPhone.
Edit the list on your iPhone. You can show, hide, or re-order the measurements in the list. This will also change the list on your Watch.
The WeatherCat for iPhone Settings will also be used for your Apple Watch.
WeatherCat is localized for English, French, German, and Italian. The language selected on your iPhone will also be used for your Apple Watch.

Slow Updates

There may be some delay for the weather update if the iPhone has to reestablish communications with the network (Local or Internet). You may have to open WeatherCat for iPhone to reestablish communication. Sometimes the Apple Watch is just slow.

Watch Does Not Update

Sometimes the Watch does not update at all. Whether in Glance or the App, the update time is always gray and doesn't change no matter what you do. If this happens, open WeatherCat for iPhone and refresh the display. There are 2 ways to do this: (1) pull down on the table until the "Refreshing..." gear appears or (2) tap "Settings" and return to WeatherCat. Try (1) first and, if that doesn?t work, try (2). If WeatherCat/Watch still does not update, then it?s likely that the problem lies with the iPhone. Read on.

WeatherCat for the iPhone "Hangs"

If WeatherCat/iPhone is non-responsive, make WeatherCat for iPhone quit. Do this by double-clicking the Home button. Then drag the WeatherCat screen up until it vanishes. Restart WeatherCat for iPhone by tapping its icon on the Home screen. Be sure to restart WeatherCat for iPhone so that it can communicate with the Watch.

If all else fails, restart the iPhone. To restart the iPhone, hold the sleep button down until the Turn Off switch appears. Swipe it to the right to turn off the iPhone. Wait a moment and then press the sleep button until you see the Apple Logo. Please let me know the conditions that you think lead to the WeatherCat for iPhone non- responsiveness. When you reboot the paired iPhone, Watch apps are still able to run, but they cannot communicate with the iPhone until after the user unlocks it.

WeatherCat for iPhone version 15 adds Apple Watch support.

Thanks for taking the time to develop this.  Even if the Apple Watch is one of those luxury items, hopefully it will continue to become more popular and this app will find some satisfied WeatherCatters in the not too distant future!

Title: WeatherCat on watchOS 3.0
Post by: The Grand Poohbah on September 19, 2016, 08:11:01 PM
Apple recently updated the Apple Watch software to watchOS 3.0. This changes how you use WeatherCat for the Apple Watch as follows:

The "Glance" is gone. In its place is the "Dock". Use the Watch app on your iPhone to add WeatherCat to the Dock. Press the rectangular button on the side of your Apple Watch to see the Dock. Swipe to find WeatherCat and tap the WeatherCat image to bring it to the front. You can use the iPhone Watch app to change the order of items in the Dock.

You can still press the stem knob to display all the apps on your Apple Watch and select WeatherCat. So there are two ways to get to WeatherCat on the Apple Watch: tap in in the Dock or tap it in the display of apps.

When you have WeatherCat on your Apple Watch screen, you still scroll to the measurement that you want to see. Tap the measurement to "lock" it in place. WeatherCat will give you a haptic "tap" to confirm that it is locked.

I have this up and running on both an iPhone 5s and an Apple watch 2.  Works as explained on local network (when I am on WiFi at home).  Not clear how to query the weather station when I am out and about, but that likely has to do with setting it up to be exposed to the web, which I don't think I have done.

This is set in the WeatherCat for iPhone Settings:
- Open WeatherCat for iPhone
- Tap "Settings" in the upper-right corner.
- Select Network - Internet 1 or Internet 2
- Enter the url for your WeatherCat server.

Port Forwarding must be enabled on your router. See WeatherCat Clients in the WeatherCat Wiki (wiki.trixology.com) for information on how to do that.
You will also need a static IP address or a DYN address (like trixology-test.dyndns.org) for the computer running WeatherCat.

You can leave the Setting on Internet 1 or 2 all the time. If you are home, WeatherCat/iPhone will find your local server. When away from home, WeatherCat/iPhone will use the Internet to access your server.

It's been reported that WeatherCat for the Apple Watch will sometimes display a blank screen even though WeatherCat on the iPhone is working properly. To correct this condition, kill and restart WeatherCat on the iPhone. Don't restart the iPhone, just WeatherCat. To kill and restart WeatherCat/iPhone, go to the iPhone Home screen, double-click the Home button, and swipe the WeatherCat screen image upward. Return to the Home screen and tap WeatherCat to restart it.

I just left a review at the iTunes Store. Probably take a day or two to show up but thanks for suggesting! Thanks again for making it so easy to read and scroll through. Excellent!

It would seem the previous reviewer at the iTunes Store did not know to enter his weather station's URL into the app and assumed the displayed data (default trixology URL) was simply incorrect for his Watch.   [sleep] [runoff]

Came here just for the blank screen fix, thanks!

Random request: Any chance we could get a WC "Complication" for the watch faces?

Thanks!

Good suggestion. I'll look into it.
